What does an oral history intern do?

An Oral History Intern assists with the collection, preservation, and organization of oral histories, which are recorded interviews that document personal experiences and historical events. They may help conduct interviews, transcribe recordings, digitize materials, and catalog collections. Interns also often work on research projects, assist with editing audio or video content, and may help with public outreach or exhibit preparation. This role provides valuable experience in historical research, archival work, and storytelling.

What are some common challenges faced by oral history interns during interviews and how can they be overcome?

Oral History Interns often encounter challenges such as building rapport with interviewees, handling sensitive or emotional topics, and ensuring high-quality audio recordings. To overcome these, it's important to prepare thoroughly, practice active listening, and approach each interview with empathy and respect. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with recording equipment in advance and having backup plans can help manage technical issues. Support from supervisors and collaboration with experienced team members are also valuable for navigating these challenges.
