What are Optimization Engineers?

Optimization Engineers are professionals who analyze, design, and implement solutions to improve the efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness of systems, processes, or products. They use mathematical models, data analysis, and simulation tools to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to achieve optimal results. These engineers work across various industries, including manufacturing, technology, energy, and logistics, to help organizations maximize output while minimizing resources and waste.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Optimization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optimization Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, data analysis, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with optimization software (such as Gurobi, CPLEX, or MATLAB), programming languages like Python, and data modeling tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing efficient solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and driving continuous improvement in complex systems.

What does an optimization engineer do?

An optimization engineer analyzes and improves processes, systems, or algorithms to increase efficiency, reduce costs, or enhance performance. They often use mathematical modeling, data analysis, and tools like MATLAB or Python to develop solutions and may work in industries such as manufacturing, logistics, or software development.

How does an Optimization Engineer typically collaborate with other departments to implement solutions?

Optimization Engineers often work closely with cross-functional teams such as production, operations, and data analysis. They collaborate by gathering input on current processes, identifying bottlenecks, and proposing data-driven improvements. Regular meetings and clear communication are crucial to ensure that proposed optimizations are practical and align with business goals. By involving stakeholders from various departments, Optimization Engineers help facilitate smoother implementation and ensure that solutions are sustainable and well-integrated.

What Is Optimization Engineering?

The job duties of an optimization engineer focus on taking an existing design and improving making it stronger, fast, more efficient, or more durable. Career qualifications for an optimization engineer include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering and years of field experience through internships or similar positions. Strong analytical and research skills are important for this job, as well as a strong background in advanced mathematics.

About This Role
The QuantumLeap Systems Integration Engineer is responsible for defining and driving end-to-end integration across Carrier data center solutions, including chillers, liquid cooling (CDUs), BMS, and DCIM platforms, to deliver a turnkey customer experience. This role focuses on reducing startup and commissioning effort through system interoperability, auto-discovery, and standardized processes across multiple products. The engineer will operate in a highly ambiguous environment, working across engineering, field, and product teams to design scalable integration approaches rather than executing predefined requirements. Success in this role requires strong industry knowledge, systems thinking, and the ability to lead without a playbook.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Build reliable, repeatable, and secure connectivity between: HVAC equipment, Controls systems, DCIM, Telemetry sources, IT infrastructure
  • Create standardized integration packages for field deployment
  • Translate customer site requirements into integration specifications and work with engineering teams to deliver solutions
  • Own end-to-end data flow validation, ensuring data accuracy, continuity, timestamp health, and protocol compliance
  • Work with Systems Modeling Engineers and Optimization Engineers to ensure models receive correct and normalized inputs
  • Collaborate with Controls Engineers to synchronize real-time states and command interfaces
  • Perform root-cause analysis for integration issues across OT/IT boundaries
  • Document integration patterns, data mappings, and commissioning workflows
  • Support deployment teams during customer rollouts
  • Ensure that integration design meets security and reliability requirements
  • Continuously improve integration frameworks for scalability and reuse

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or Mathematics
  • 8+ years of experience integrating multi-vendor systems, ideally across BMS, DCIM, HVAC, or industrial automation
  • 3+ years of experience with OT/IT protocols such as BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, SNMP, MQTT, OPC-UA, or Redfish
  • 3+ years of experience implementing system-to-system integrations including API-based integrations (REST, WebSockets, GraphQL), Device connectivity onboarding, Schema or asset-model mapping

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or Controls Systems
  • Strong understanding of data center, building automation, or industrial facilities architectures
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose integration failures, communication issues, protocol mismatches, and telemetry quality problems
  • Ability to work cross functionally with platform engineers, controls engineers, and field engineering teams
  • Familiarity with Linux environments, networking fundamentals, and secure system configuration
  • Strong documentation and communication skills for mapping requirements, interfaces, and test procedures
  • Experience integrating: DCIM tools (Nlyte, EcoStruxure IT, Trellis), BMS/BAS systems (WebCTRL, Metasys, Desigo, Honeywell), HVAC systems (chillers, CDUs, CRAHs, pumps, towers)
  • Hands-on experience with: Time-series databases, Edge computing frameworks (K3s, Azure IoT Edge, AWS Greengrass)
  • Experience working in air-gapped or on-prem-only deployments
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for operational systems
  • Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test rigs
  • Familiarity with data normalization, metadata handling, and asset hierarchies
  • Understanding of Carrier-specific ecosystems (PIC, ALC WebCTRL, Nlyte DCIM)
