Tenaska is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, an organization that's adept in natural gas and power marketing, power management, development and acquisition of generation assets, operation of power plants and more.

Position Summary:
The Optimization Engineer will support the development of new and existing optimization and forecasting algorithms and related technologies.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Work with Vice President, Strategic Technology and team to design, implement and improve optimization technologies around various energy-related problems.
  • Support research and development of new optimization algorithms and implementations when required to solve specific business problems
  • Develop necessary software for optimization and prediction models.
  • Design and build necessary systems for simulation and back-testing of optimization and prediction models
  • Develop reports to evaluate real-world performance of trained models
  • Other projects as assigned
  • Dependable, reliable, and predictable attendance is required

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. The Company is not able to take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time for this position or commit to doing so in the future for individuals with current authorization to work via, for example, CPT or OPT, and would need sponsorship in the future.
  • Undergraduate degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or related fields and graduate degree or equivalent professional experience in Operations Research, Electrical Engineering or related field with strong computer science training and experience.
  • Advanced-level experience with optimization tools such as CPlex, HiGHS and Gurobi.
  • Strong skills in applied computational mathematics, optimization, and simulation programming.
  • Experience with commercial and open-source power system modelling software such as Pandapower, PowerModels.jl, ETAP, PowerWorld, Plexos, etc. preferred but not required.
  • Strong experience with programming in Python with a focus on Data Science and Optimization.
  • Experience with cloud deployment, orchestration and operations of optimization models.
  • Strong background in Deep Learning algorithms as applied to optimization and control problems with specific experience in Reinforcement Learning and other training methods.
  • Experience with machine learning libraries and algorithms such as PyTorch.
  • Experience with machine learning data preparation concepts (cross validation, folding, boosting, feature engineering) with clear understanding of time series related concerns.
  • Able to quickly learn necessary skills and information to be effective in position where necessary.
  • Curious, inquisitive, creative, exploration-driven, and self-motivated with a passion for applied Machine Learning and optimization.
