Primary Accountabilities:

The CFO/Business Operations Director is a senior executive and strategic partner to the Chief Operations Officer (COO)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), responsible for financial leadership and company-wide Business Operations Director oversight, serving as the executive leader for the Accounting Department, Risk Management, Human Resources, and Information Technology. The role integrates traditional CFO functions - budgeting, forecasting, job costing, WIP reporting, internal controls, and compliance with construction-specific standards - with management of cash flow, capital structure, and banking and bonding relationships, building a risk-aware, process-driven culture that keeps the organization financially strong, operationally efficient, contractually protected, and aligned for long-term strategic growth.

Major Duties:

Executive Leadership & Strategic Planning

• Serve as a key member of the executive team, partnering with the COO/CEO to shape and execute long-term financial and operational strategy, including capital allocation, expansion, technology adoption, fleet strategy, and organizational structure.
• Provide investment recommendations based on ROI, risk modeling, project performance, and strategic growth objectives.
• Lead cross-functional company financial planning, using benchmarking and peer group analysis to identify performance gaps and improvement opportunities.

Financial Management & Reporting

• Lead the annual budget process; perform budget vs. actual and quarterly financial analyses, identifying pivot points and recommending adjustments in labor, expenses, and project allocations.
• Conduct routine WIP (Work-in-Progress) analysis in collaboration with Operations and Accounting to ensure accurate project accounting, backlog, revenue, and margin forecasting, and to identify financial risks.
• Develop and maintain long-term forecasts, scenario modeling, cash flow projections, and financial models evaluating equipment purchase/sale profitability, fleet lifecycle ROI, and profitable staffing ratios.
• Direct the preparation and presentation of timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for the COO/CEO and ownership, maintaining strong internal controls over financial reporting.
• Manage cash flow, liquidity, and capital structure; calculate bonding capacity and equity requirements; monitor compliance with lender covenants and surety requirements; and maintain key banking, bonding, audit, and insurance relationships.
• Develop and optimize company-wide tax strategy in coordination with external CPAs; direct the annual audit, financial reviews, and tax filings.

Business Operations Director Oversight & Leadership Development

Provides executive leadership over the Accounting Department, Risk Management, Human Resources, and Information Technology, working in tandem with the leaders and managers of those departments to meet department objectives.

• Integrate these department functions with field operations, improving company-wide efficiency through standardized workflows, SOPs, operational dashboards, and KPI reporting.
• In partnership with the executive leaders of the Operations division, regularly review backlog and project health to ensure project teams have the tools and financial insights needed to meet margin targets.
• Oversee contractual and commercial risk across projects, reviewing contracts, subcontracts, and vendor agreements for financial and risk exposure and required protections.
• Provide executive direction for insurance programs, claims trends, and subcontractor compliance, working in tandem with the Risk Management manager and Operations to reduce losses and improve EMR.
• Lead and mentor department leaders and their teams, establishing performance metrics, development plans, and accountability structures for direct reports.
• Strengthen the financial and operational acumen of Operations leaders and Project Managers, promoting a culture of transparency, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Perform other assignments as directed.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive financial and operational leadership experience in construction or a closely related field, including job costing, contract accounting, and project-based financial management.
• Deep knowledge of GAAP, construction-specific accounting practices (e.g., WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion), regulatory requirements, and bonding/insurance frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models supporting multi-phase projects and long-term capital planning, while maintaining liquidity and bonding capacity under varying market conditions.
• Proven experience with financial controls, compliance, audits, and enterprise risk management - identifying and mitigating project, financial, safety, and operational risks, including subcontractor risk, cost escalation, schedule delays, and contract exposure.
• Proficiency with construction financial systems (e.g., Viewpoint, CMiC, Sage 300, Procore financials) and the ability to leverage technology to improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and risk visibility.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills with owners, lenders, bonding agencies, insurers, auditors, and regulatory bodies, and a record of leading cross-functional teams and major initiatives such as process optimization, ERP transitions, or acquisitions.

Physical Demands:

• Primarily office-based role with periodic visits to active construction sites; regular sitting, standing, and walking, with the ability to lift and move materials up to 20 pounds.
• During site visits, ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs or temporary structures, and wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, safety footwear).
• Sufficient visual acuity to review documents, financial reports, and computer screens, with clear verbal and written communication for meetings, presentations, and field coordination.
• Ability to travel between job sites, project offices, and company locations as needed.

Work Environment:

• Professional, deadline-oriented environment combining office, virtual meeting, and construction site settings; occasional travel to project sites, client meetings, and industry events.
• Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, heat, and cold; noise levels are low to moderate in the office and moderate to high in the field.
