About the Department:
Student Centers integrates all aspects of campus life by serving as Mason's facility, program, and support services management department for the Johnson Center, Student Union Building I, and The Hub. The department aims to support and complement the academic process; provide excellent customer service to the Mason community and visitors; promote diversity and campus spirit through cooperative participation; encourage student development, social competency, and responsibility.
About the Position:
The primary purpose of the Operations Assistant is to provide daily operational and event support throughout the Student Centers and other supported facilities. Operational support includes preparing venues/areas for events (set-up/removal of tables/chairs/staging, etc.). The position will perform general building maintenance (basic repairs, dry/wet mopping, changing lightbulbs, etc.) and provide customer service to all patrons of these spaces. The Operations Assistant works closely with the Event Operation Crew Leaders to ensure proper support is available during all operating hours. This position reports to the Operations Supervisor.
The hours for this position are Wednesday-Sunday, 4:30pm-1:00am.
Responsibilities:
  • Performs room/venue set-up for events per diagrams/instructions from our University Scheduling System including, but not limited to, A/V equipment, furnishings (table, chairs, podiums, staging, pipe and drape skirting, etc.);
  • Assists with cleaning venue spaces, proper storage, and maintenance of event furnishings/equipment;
  • Assists in transporting equipment from different buildings utilizing University vehicles/golf-carts when necessary;
  • Assists with the opening and closing of our buildings and/or event venues;
  • Completes work or work order requests as directed by the Operations Crew Leader, Operations Supervisor, Assistant Director of Event Services, or other Student Centers staff;
  • Provides support or assistance to patrons that utilize the Student Centers facilities or other managed spaces;
  • Prints event set up reports/diagrams from our University Scheduling System daily, or as needed;
  • Inspects Student Center buildings on a daily basis for maintenance issues; and identifies issues and potential safety hazards;
  • Performs regular building maintenance including, but not limited to, lightbulb replacement, sanding, floor maintenance (mopping, waxing, buffing floors, etc.), and other minor repairs or services as requested;
  • Assists in resetting public furnishings and ensuring buildings/areas meet expectations of patrons;
  • Serves as on-site personnel to handle emergencies, maintenance issues, and last-minute event changes; and
  • Assists other Student Center entities/departments as requested and with appropriate approval.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Knowledge of housekeeping methods, equipment, and chemicals;
  • Basic computer knowledge including e-mail and able to learn and use basic computer programs used for event logistics and operations;
  • Ability to communicate verbally, and read and write in English;
  • Must be able to climb and work on ladders (12' or less);
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs (with or without reasonable accommodation); and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/ . The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Custodial and or venue/event set up experience preferred.
