Job Description

Timmons Group is seeking an experienced Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Group in our Raleigh, NC office. The Environmental Scientist will support and lead environmental field investigations, technical assessments, reporting efforts, and permitting for a variety of environmental projects. This role is responsible for producing technically sound work products, coordinating field activities, making informed field decisions related to wetland assessments, delineations, and other environmental evaluations, and communicating findings and recommendations to project managers, team members, and clients. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Collect, interpret, and document environmental field data in accordance with established methods, regulatory requirements, and project guidelines 

  • Prepare and present clear briefings of field findings, technical conclusions, and recommended next steps 

  • Work with environmental staff in developing all aspects of Nationwide Permit Applications and Riparian Buffer Authorizations. 

  • Complete site inspections and reports for ASTM E1527-21 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) 

  • Identify common plant species for delineations, habitat assessments, and tree inventories. 

  • Use professional judgment to manage assigned tasks and independently complete project work within established scope, schedule, and budget expectations 

  • Serve as a technical resource and, when assigned, act as task manager for smaller scope or specialty environmental projects 

  • Review assigned work for accuracy, completeness, and quality through formal and informal quality control processes 

  • Proactively identify technical, schedule, or budget-related issues and coordinate with the Project Manager or Group Leader to support timely resolution 

  • Communicate technical information to clients, regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and NCDEQ Division of Water Resources, and internal project teams as directed by the Project Manager or Group Leader 

  • Travel locally, out of town, and overnight as needed to support field work and project needs 

  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience 

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in the natural resources field, with an emphasis on wetland and stream delineations. Ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience 

  • Strong office and field skills, including the ability and willingness to perform field tasks in varying weather conditions, outdoor environments, and challenging terrain 

  • At least 1-year of experience leading wetland delineations and riparian buffer determinations is required 

  • Experience with threatened and endangered species habitat reviews/surveys, environmental permitting, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, tree inventories, and/or erosion and sediment control compliance inspections is a plus. 

  • Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to read and interpret technical literature, maps, and engineering plans 

  • Highly motivated, self-directed, flexible, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a dynamic environment while collaborating with employees, clients, and project teams to meet deadlines and support Timmons Group's vision, mission, and shared values
