Job description

Surgical Technologist

Fairview has an immediate opening for a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room at Fairview Southdale Hospital located in Edina, MN. As a Surgical Technologist, you'll assist in surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, arranging and passing instruments to surgeons, and ensuring a sterile environment under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. You'll play a crucial role in supporting the surgical team and maintaining the safety and efficiency of the operating room.

Schedule: This position will be working 0.9 FTE (72 hours every two weeks). The shift length will be 8 hours on the day/evening/night shift. This position will also work every third weekend, onsite call required.

About our Operating Room at Southdale:

  • Our surgeries include, but are not limited to, Open Heart, Neuro, Orthopedic, Generals, Da Vinci, Cardiovascular, Cysto, Colorectal, Urology, OB, Specialty Eye Cases, ENT, Neuro and Spine Surgery.
  • Occasional weeknight on-call and every third weekend call rotation with 30-minute response time.
  • Staffed for 315 beds hospital wide with the OR and same-day surgery departments having a combined total of 24 rooms.
  • We serve a diverse group of patients, mainly adults, averaging 20,000 cases per year.

As a Surgical Technologist, you will be responsible for:

  • Supplying appropriate instruments, suture, and specialty items.
  • Maintaining aseptic technique during all sterile procedures.
  • Ensuring accurate identification and handling of specimens.
  • Counting all required sponges, sharps, and instruments.
  • Assuring availability and accurate functioning of supplies and equipment.
  • Modifying clinical interventions based on population served.
  • Nurturing a culture of improvement, efficiency, and innovative thinking.
  • Anticipating the surgeon's needs.
  • Following appropriate action in emergency situations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Complete one of the following by hire date: Military Surgical Assistant; OR, LPN (licensed in MN) Surgical Assistant; OR, Surgical Technologist training
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through Health Care Providers (or ability to obtain by hire date)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
  • AST certification or certification eligible at time of hire
  • 1 to 3 years surgical tech experience

Other Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive developmental needs of population served.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate outcomes and interventions.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to work well under a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize and multi-task in a complex work environment.
