DescriptionSummary:
The Head Softball Coach reports to the Vice President and Director of Athletics and is responsible for all aspects of the operation of a competitive NCAA softball program. Responsibilities include coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, academic monitoring, compliance, team travel, and administrative support. The Assistant Coach promotes academic success, personal growth, and athletic achievement while ensuring compliance with NCAA, SWAC Conference, and Alabama A&M University regulations.
Examples of DutiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct all aspects of the program and build a winning culture aligned with the University's mission.
- Plan and lead practices, competitions, conditioning, strategy, and scouting; evaluate team and individual performance.
- Hire, supervise, develop, and evaluate assistant coaches and support staff.
- Champion academic excellence and monitor progress toward the degree; partner with Academic Services on NCAA eligibility.
- Lead initiatives that strengthen team APR and Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
- Prioritize student-athlete mental health and well-being; foster a supportive environment and connect athletes to campus and clinical resources.
- Serve as a mentor; model sportsmanship, discipline, accountability, and ethical conduct.
- Lead recruiting within NCAA rules, including annual strategy, evaluation of prospects for athletic ability, academics, and character, campus visits, and coaching networks.
- Ensure full compliance with NCAA, conference, University, and departmental rules; complete required education; report potential violations promptly; maintain accurate records.
- Manage program operations (scheduling, travel, equipment, facilities) and the operating budget.
- Assist with scholarship management alongside Athletics Administration and Compliance.
- Support fundraising, donor and alumni engagement, camps and clinics, media, and community outreach.
Typical QualificationsMinimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Collegiate coaching and recruiting experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree.
- Head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Experience in student-athlete academic development and retention initiatives.
- Experience managing budgets and supervising staff.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting and competitive achievement.
