Job description

Summary

The Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for assisting in the direction of all phases of a nationally competitive softball program in accordance with Barry University, the Sunshine State Conference, and NCAA DII regulations. Responsible for supporting the Head Coach by providing individual instruction and teaching softball. Under the supervision of the Head Coach, provides leadership and direction for the softball program, including Varsity and JV. Oversees recruitment of the Varsity program. Also, coordinates community involvement, completing/submitting administrative compliance documents and other duties assigned by the Head Coach, Sport Supervisor, or Athletic Director.

Essential Functions

Organizes, supervises, and conducts teaching sessions:

  • Assists the head coach with instructing/ teaching student-athletes in the rules, regulations, and techniques of softball

  • Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach.

  • Assists the head coach with supervising student-athletes during practices and competitions.

  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.

  • Teaches assigned fundamentals and skills during practice and games.

  • Assesses players' skills and keeps the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students.

  • Models professional behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.

  • Becomes proficient in data analytics, AWRE cameras, and any additional technology used for the softball program.

Establishes and maintains an organized recruiting system:

  • Recruits academically qualified student-athletes who form a competitive squad and meet established academic goals and objectives of the department.

  • Oversees recruitment of varsity program.

  • Participates in community service activities.

  • Consults with the Associate AD/ SWA, Compliance, Student-Athlete Success, and FAR on all matters of eligibility.

Performs administrative functions in support of the Intercollegiate Athletic program:

  • Cooperates with the athletic administration in the implementation of department policies

  • Assists in the direction of the program within the scope of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program

  • Maintains a representative level of performance in the conference that satisfies departmental goals and objectives.

  • Consults with the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance concerning institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations that will directly affect the program

  • Maintains adequate records.

  • Assists with the planning and execution of travel logistics, including driving, for the softball program.

Manages student data, including admissions, financial aid, registration, and academic performance data. Data are treated as confidential in accordance with federal, state and university regulations.

The Assistant Coach updates and maintains information on the Compliance Assistant program, Salesforce, Workday, and Teamworks, etc. Assist with camps, clinics, tournaments, advancement projects/fundraising as needed.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • 1-3 years of coaching experience.

  • General knowledge of MS Word and Outlook

  • Adept at written and oral communication
