Job Description Summary
Shawnee State University seeks a highly motivated and student-centered Assistant Softball Coach to assist in all aspects of the softball program. This position supports the Head Softball Coach in promoting competitive success, academic achievement, student-athlete development, and compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA Division II regulations.
The Assistant Softball Coach is expected to positively represent Shawnee State University and contribute to the overall mission and culture of the Department of Athletics.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
Coaching and Player Development
  • Assist with planning and conducting practices, conditioning sessions, and skill development workouts
  • Provide instruction in offensive, defensive, pitching, catching, and/or position-specific development
  • Assist with game preparation, scouting reports, and opponent analysis
  • Support in-game coaching responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach
  • Promote a positive team culture emphasizing accountability, sportsmanship, and personal growth

Recruiting
  • Identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes who align with the university's academic and athletic standards
  • Assist with recruiting communications through phone calls, emails, social media, and campus visits
  • Attend high school, travel ball, showcase, and tournament events for recruiting purposes
  • Help coordinate official and unofficial visits
  • Maintain recruiting databases and assist with recruiting organization and follow-up

Student-Athlete Support
  • Encourage academic success and monitor student-athlete academic progress
  • Foster personal development, leadership, and retention of student-athletes
  • Assist with monitoring team conduct and adherence to departmental expectations
  • Serve as a mentor and positive role model for student-athletes

Operations and Administration
  • Assist with team travel coordination, equipment management, and practice organization
  • Help oversee camps, clinics, and community engagement activities
  • Support fundraising and alumni engagement efforts for the softball program
  • Assist with social media content and program promotion
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Softball Coach or Director of Athletics

Compliance and University Expectations
  • Adhere to all Shawnee State University, conference, and NCAA Division II rules and regulations
  • Maintain required certifications and complete mandatory institutional training
  • Support departmental initiatives, policies, and best practices
  • Demonstrate professionalism and strong collaboration with campus partners and athletic department staff

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to demonstrate softball techniques and actively participate in practices
  • Ability to travel and perform duties during outdoor athletic events in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and move equipment associated with softball operations

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous collegiate coaching or recruiting experience
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations
  • Experience with player development technology, scouting software, and video analysis
