Youth Services Assistant Librarian
Location: John McIntire Library 220 N. Fifth St Zanesville, OH 43701
Salary: $19.99- $21.74 per hour (40 hours a week, varied schedule)
Closing Date: June 24th, 2026
The Muskingum County Library System is seeking an Assistant Librarian for our Youth Services department. In this role, you will connect with young minds by planning engaging educational programs, assisting families with library resources, and helping shape a vibrant youth materials collection.
Responsibilities:
  • Serves the general public seeking youth materials and services. Assists customers in locating
    materials for youth, and answers customer reference questions through use of print and
    electronic resources. Finds age appropriate materials for school assignments, provides
    reader’s advisory, and directs customers to appropriate areas of library. Answers general
    questions to provide needed information and maintain good public relations.
  • Provides assistance to customers in use of library equipment and services including Internet,
    online catalogue, and electronic devices (i.e. eReaders, tablets, phones, etc.).
  • Plans, develops and conducts youth services programs. Researches and uses age-appropriate
    books, crafts, activities, and songs, and presents entertaining and educational programs.
  • Participates in planning and implementing summer reading program. Selects and decorates for
    program themes, schedules performers visits schools, distributes flyers, and makes television
    appearances to promote programs. Monitors participant progress, tallies statistics, and
    presents incentives and rewards.
  • Performs outreach services for schools, day care centers and community groups. Visits daycare
    facilities, preschools, public schools, and adult groups to present programs and promote
    information about youth library services.
  • Maintains responsibility for presenting informative and entertaining displays for youth services
    area. Plans and creates displays, makes and selects decorations and selects materials and
    develops displays.
  • Maintains knowledge of available library resources and knowledge of customer reading
    preferences. Compiles bibliographies and booklists.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of library science and technology; library practices; public relations; youth literature;
    computers and electronic devices; children’s developmental stages and reading preferences;
    youth programming; Dewey decimal system.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; relate well
    with youth of varying economic and social backgrounds exhibit a broad reading background;
    organize work; prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports; develop and maintain good
    working relationships with library customers, supervisors and co-workers, exhibit creativity to
    prepare informative and entertaining programs; maintain confidentiality of confidential and
    sensitive subject matter.
  • Skill in creating age-appropriate children programs; operation of automated library equipment,
    online catalogue and other library equipment; operation of computers and electronic devices;
    communicating effectively in written and oral form; routine typing.
