Multicultural Advisor
This position primarily advises, mentors, and coaches BYU multicultural students in academic, financial, cultural, and social needs. This position utilizes and assesses learning outcomes to direct student advisement. The advisor identifies student needs in order to assist them in successfully transitioning to BYU, to connect them to critical support resources and to engage them in extracurricular opportunities that help them achieve the Aims of a BYU education.
What you'll be doing in this position:
Continuing Multicultural Student Advisement
- Provide holistic, one-on-one advisement (academic, financial, personal, cultural) using student development models.
- Build supportive relationships and help students identify and resolve challenges.
- Guide graduation planning and educate on core requirements using effective tools and learning outcomes.
- Document interactions, track student progress, and follow up with at-risk or high-credit students.
- Connect students to campus resources, assist with financial planning, and support scholarship processes and events.
Prospective and Newly Admitted Student Advisement
- Provide accurate guidance on admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications.
- Support new students with course registration, major selection, transition, and success strategies.
Citizenship and Professional Development
- Participate in trainings, conferences, and ongoing professional development.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Master's degree in advisement, counseling, higher education,social work, or relevant area and 2 years of advisement experienceOR
- Master's degree in relevant area and graduate coursework in counseling, advising,social workor higher education and 2 years of advisement experience.
- Knowledge of student development theory and program management.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of the University, including the Aims of a BYU Educationand the UniversityStatement on Fostering an Enriched Environment.
- Demonstrated initiative and independent thinking;the ability to organize and prioritize tasks with flexibility, be detail-oriented and work autonomously.
- Demonstrated professional judgment and decision-making; the ability to determine and evaluate the consequences and/or ramifications of possible decisions;setting professional boundaries;creative problem solving.
- Demonstrated experience in mentoring,advisingand educating students. Strong aptitude for assisting students.
- Demonstrated strong personal, written,and oral communication skills. The ability to express ideas and provide feedback while remaining objective and supportive of the ultimate outcome.
- The ability to fully participate with, contribute to,and support the MSS team.
- Demonstrated experience with computer technology and database programs, including current updates on multi-media technology.
- A broad perspective and understanding of other cultures and the challenges that may accompany students from diverse backgrounds.
- Thorough awareness of advising resources and a demonstrated ability to develop a positive networking relationship with other campus departments.
- Research, analytical, evaluative,and assessment skills; the ability to use systematic inquiry to improve student and department performance.
- Demonstrated ability tosuccessfully and independently leadimportant programs, projects, services including, detailed organizing, managing financial resources, coordinatingwith other staff members and programs, supervising student employees, and assessing and improving outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to handle crucial conversations and professional behavior towards students, colleagues, and administrators.
Preferred
- Master's degree in academic advising, counseling, psychology,social work,higher educationor relevant area and 4+ years of higher education academic advising or counseling experience.

Pay Grade: 52
Typical Starting Pay: $65,500 - $84,500
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
