Job Description:
The Mid-Level Process Mechanical Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for process mechanical construction projects and supporting senior estimating staff throughout the project lifecycle. The role evaluates project documents, performs quantity takeoffs, analyzes market pricing, and develops cost validations to support accurate budgeting and competitive procurement. The candidate works closely with project teams, architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers to ensure estimates align with project scope, industry standards, and current market conditions.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Estimating: Prepare detailed cost estimates using project drawings, specifications, and other design documentation to support budgeting, procurement, and project planning activities.
Quantity Takeoffs: Perform accurate quantity takeoffs from available design and construction documents to support estimate development and cost analysis.
Cost Analysis: Develop independent “should-cost” estimates to evaluate contractor pricing submissions and help confirm pricing is reasonable, competitive, and aligned with project scope requirements.
Bid Reconciliation: Review and reconcile trade bids against project scope, budget expectations, market conditions, and estimate assumptions to identify variances or gaps.
Pricing Research: Gather and maintain current pricing information from contractors, suppliers, vendors, and industry databases to support accurate estimating.
Construction Knowledge: Apply knowledge of union labor environments, trade practices, and construction cost standards relevant to process mechanical projects.
Collaboration: Coordinate with architects, engineers, project teams, and other stakeholders to clarify scope details, resolve estimating questions, and support project objectives.
Documentation: Maintain organized estimate files, supporting documentation, and project records in accordance with company procedures and document control standards.
Cost Reporting: Prepare estimate comparisons, reconciliations, and variance explanations between multiple project estimates or bid submissions.
Process Improvement: Support senior staff in identifying opportunities to improve estimating workflows, cost tracking methods, and operational efficiency.
Team Support: Provide guidance and technical support to junior team members and assist with assigned estimating tasks and deliverables.
Field Coordination: Conduct project site visits or walkthroughs, when required, to verify existing conditions, review project scope, and support estimate accuracy. Site visits may involve travel to client locations depending on project requirements.
Technical Judgment: Perform assignments with a high level of accountability while exercising sound professional judgment on standard estimating activities and occasional complex project features.
Adaptability: Operate effectively in a fast-paced project environment while managing shifting priorities, schedule changes, and evolving project requirements.
Additional Support: Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor based on business and project needs.
Qualification Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
Experience: 5-7 years of experience in construction estimating, process mechanical estimating, project controls, quantity surveying, or related cost management functions.
Estimating Knowledge: Well-versed in quantity takeoffs and proficient in using RSMeans or similar cost estimating resources to support accurate construction cost development.
Industry Affiliations: Familiarity with or exposure to industry organizations and standards such as MCAA, SMACNA, and/or NECA, depending on trade discipline and project requirements.
Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Windows operating systems, and web-based project or estimating platforms.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities with attention to detail and cost accuracy.
Communication: Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams while managing individual responsibilities and deadlines.
Organization: Strong organizational and documentation management skills with the ability to maintain accurate project records and estimate files.
