Position Summary

The Director of Membership is responsible for developing and executing strategies that drive membership growth, retention, and engagement. This individual will cultivate relationships with current and prospective members, promote association products and services, oversee membership processes, and collaborate with staff to strengthen member communications and marketing efforts.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with strong sales, relationship-building, and communication skills who is passionate about helping independent insurance agencies succeed.

Key Responsibilities Membership Growth & Recruitment
  • Develop and execute strategic membership recruitment plans.
  • Identify and engage prospective member agencies through direct outreach and relationship-building activities.
  • Conduct active and passive prospecting efforts to generate new membership opportunities.
  • Represent Big I Indiana at conferences, industry events, and networking opportunities.
Member Retention & Engagement
  • Develop initiatives that increase member participation and utilization of association programs, products, and services.
  • Create and implement retention strategies that strengthen member satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Re-engage lapsed members through targeted outreach and value-based communication.
  • Conduct regular agency visits and member calls to build strong relationships and identify member needs.
Membership Operations
  • Oversee membership application, onboarding, renewal, and retention processes.
  • Maintain accurate and complete membership records within the Association Management System (AMS).
  • Monitor membership trends and performance metrics and recommend improvements as needed.
  • Regularly evaluate membership strategies and adjust plans to achieve organizational goals.
Marketing & Collaboration
  • Collaborate with staff to develop membership marketing campaigns and recruitment materials.
  • Assist in creating content that increases awareness of Big I Indiana’s products, services, and membership benefits.
  • Support efforts to enhance the association’s digital presence and attract prospective members.
Member Advocacy & Feedback
  • Gather and communicate member feedback regarding industry challenges, market conditions, and association offerings.
  • Provide regular updates to staff leadership and the Board of Directors regarding member needs and trends.
  • Monitor and track specific member wants and needs to enhance membership experience.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Sales, Marketing, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in sales, membership development, business development, association management, or relationship management.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking abilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and achieve goals.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and presentation software.
Preferred
  • Experience working in a trade association, nonprofit organization, insurance industry, or membership-based organization.
