Job description

RVE, an Ardurra Company, is seeking a GIS Intern in our Cherry Hill, NJ office.

As a GIS Intern, you’ll work with our engineering and GIS team on a variety of projects while gaining hands-on experience with geographic information systems and data management. You’ll assist with tasks such as creating and updating maps, organizing and analyzing spatial data, maintaining GIS databases, and supporting field data collection and project mapping. This is a great opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and build your GIS skills in a real-world engineering environment.

Primary Function:

Under moderate supervision, the GIS Intern supports the engineering and GIS team with a variety of geographic information systems, mapping, and data management projects. The Intern will gain hands-on experience with GIS mapping, spatial data analysis, database management, field data collection, and project documentation. The Intern will work alongside experienced GIS professionals, engineers, and other project team members to develop an understanding of how GIS is applied to engineering, municipal, environmental, and infrastructure projects. The Intern is expected to demonstrate growing technical skills, initiative, attention to detail, and reliability in supporting project teams.

Primary Duties:

  • Under supervision, performs entry-level GIS tasks while gaining exposure to a variety of engineering, municipal, infrastructure, and mapping projects.
  • Assists with creating, updating, and maintaining GIS maps, datasets, and project information.
  • Supports the collection, organization, editing, and analysis of spatial and attribute data.
  • Assists with maintaining GIS databases and ensuring data is accurate, organized, and up to date.
  • Supports engineers and GIS professionals with mapping and spatial analysis for municipal infrastructure, utilities, transportation, land development, environmental, and other projects.
  • Assists with preparing maps, exhibits, figures, and other GIS-related project deliverables.
  • Supports field data collection and assists with documenting and mapping existing infrastructure, facilities, utilities, and other site conditions.
  • Assists with converting, editing, and integrating data from various sources and formats into GIS systems.
  • Performs basic quality control and reviews GIS data, maps, and project documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Applies basic knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, spatial data, and coordinate systems to contribute to project deliverables.
  • Gains experience using GIS and related software to create maps, analyze data, manage databases, and prepare project documents.
  • Supports coordination between GIS, civil engineering, surveying, environmental, municipal, and other project disciplines.
  • Assists with researching geographic data, municipal records, mapping resources, and other information needed to support project assignments.
  • Gains exposure to GIS applications throughout the project process, including planning, data collection, analysis, mapping, design, asset management, and project documentation.
  • Supports project teams with various technical and administrative assignments as needed.
  • Specific activities vary by assignment and project needs.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geospatial Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • Interest in GIS, mapping, spatial data, municipal infrastructure, engineering, and/or the built environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and work ethic.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, or other GIS, CAD, and mapping software is preferred but not required.
