Job description

Summary
The Air War College Department of Strategy invites applications for the Professor of Strategy and Wargaming position beginning summer 2026. AWC is a resident master's degree program for senior military/civilian leaders from the U.S. and partner nations. The department receives financial support for research, conference attendance, and professional development. The initial appointment may be up for 3 years and is renewable. The position should be considered equivalent to tenure-track.

Duties
Help
Implements AWC wargaming program: designs wargames and integrates them into core curriculum
  • Develops wargame scenarios and associated curriculum in collaboration with course directors in order to meet course learning objectives
  • Trains faculty and student facilitators
  • Manages wargaming resources and material to include tabletop and digital games
  • Supports wargame efforts in electives and capstone exercise

Teaching: leading graduate-level seminars of 12-16 students at a 2/2 equivalent load
  • Teaches the Department of Strategy's core curriculum: Foundations of Strategy and the Contemporary Strategy course
  • Develops and instructs year-long Wargaming elective
  • Develops core curriculum and advises student research
  • Facilitates experiential learning (wargames, strategy exercises, etc.) throughout academic year

Research: engaging in professional research and writing in areas of expertise
  • Publishes book manuscripts, articles, monographs, and book reviews in scholarly journals, professional journals, and other outlets
  • Presents results of research at conferences and symposia

Service: Providing academic leadership and institutional support
  • Fulfills administrative roles and serves on institutional committees as directed by the Department Chair, Dean, or Commandant to support AWC programs.
  • Collaborates with other Professional Military Education (PME) schools, professional organizations, and civilian universities to foster partnerships and professional development.
  • Represents the Air War College by delivering guest lectures and participating in panel discussions at external academic and military institutions.
  • Maintains academic currency through consistent literature review and active participation in professional associations.
  • Provides subject-matter expertise and academic support for Air University-sponsored conferences and events.

  • Incumbent will be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance to perform temporary duty, including overseas travel.
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • You will be required to serve a 1-year trial period.
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Position subject to initial and random drug testing.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of educational requirements, instructional/evaluation methods, and the ability to design, develop, and present graduate-level curriculum to senior leadership.
2. Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and facilitate educational wargames and experiential curricula within a professional military education environment.
3. Knowledge of diverse research methodologies with the ability to conduct, lead, and publish original scholarship (discovery, integration, application) and advise student research.
4. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, exercise peer leadership among graduate-level faculty, and collaborate effectively with senior military and academic leadership on program development and administration.
5. Advanced skills in written and oral communication to effectively brief, lecture, and publish for a wide variety of civilian and military audiences, including Air Force and DoD agencies.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level, including the ability to develop curriculum and present the material.
  • Because of the senior nature of the AWC program, the incumbent may be required to teach within other areas of the school's curriculum.
  • This position is included in the school's student-faculty ratio for purposes of Joint Professional Military Education accreditation.

Education
A Master's Degree in Military History or a related field with a focus on Military Planning or Operations, is required. A PhD is highly desired and advanced doctoral students are encouraged to apply.

The position will be an initial three-year appointment with a one-year probationary period, with the potential for continued reappointment for additional 1-5 year terms. This position is subject to Air University's tenure and promotion policy, this position is tenure-track eligible.
