Manager Program Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Program Manager, you need strong leadership, project management expertise, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree and PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, as well as budgeting and reporting systems, is typically required. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management are essential soft skills for overseeing complex programs and guiding teams. These competencies ensure effective program delivery, alignment with organizational goals, and the ability to navigate challenges across multiple projects.

How do Manager Program Managers typically balance overseeing multiple projects while supporting their teams' development?

Manager Program Managers often juggle several large-scale initiatives simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and effective delegation. They regularly meet with project leads to monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure alignment with organizational goals, while also providing mentorship and professional development opportunities for their teams. Striking a balance between delivering results and fostering team growth involves transparent communication, setting clear expectations, and empowering team members to take ownership of their work.

What is a Program Manager?

They manage the overall program, ensuring that individual projects align with business goals, stay on schedule, and meet budgetary requirements. Program Managers work closely with project managers, stakeholders, and executive leadership to address risks, allocate resources, and facilitate communication across teams.

The organization focuses on operational excellence, risk reduction, and long‑term reliability across complex systems and stakeholders throughout North America.

Role Overview

This is an extremely senior Program Management role requiring 10+ years of dedicated Program Management experience (not Project Management). The Senior IT Program Manager is accountable for leading large, complex, multi‑workstream programs and overall program management operations, including executive reporting, governance, and long‑term benefits realization.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Alignment
  • Align program goals with organizational strategy and priorities.
  • Define program vision, roadmap, and business outcomes.
  • Identify and oversee technology and business initiatives supporting strategic objectives.
  • Communicate clearly with executive sponsors and senior stakeholders.
Program & Portfolio Leadership
  • Lead and coordinate multiple project managers and workstreams.
  • Provide comprehensive reporting across all program and project metrics.
  • Own program planning, execution, risk, and issue resolution with minimal oversight.
  • Manage cross‑program dependencies and remove delivery roadblocks.
Governance, Risk & Financial Management
  • Establish and maintain program governance, cadence, KPIs, and dashboards.
  • Identify and mitigate cross‑program risks and dependencies.
  • Ensure programs remain within budget and deliver measurable value.
  • Track financial performance, resources, and cost‑benefit outcomes.
Stakeholder, Communication & Change Management
  • Manage relationships with leadership, partners, and impacted teams.
  • Deliver executive‑level program updates and status communications.
  • Lead or partner on change management, adoption, and transition to operations.
Delivery & Benefits Realization
  • Focus on long‑term outcomes, not just delivery milestones.
  • Measure and validate expected business and operational benefits.
  • Ensure smooth transition of delivered solutions into steady‑state operations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Administration, or related field required.
  • 10–12+ years of experience exclusively in Program Management, leading complex, enterprise‑scale programs.
  • Strong executive presence with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Proven ability to operate independently in complex environments.
  • Deep knowledge of program management principles and PMI standards.
  • PMP, PgMP, or related certification preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio).
  • Ability to adapt quickly to enterprise tools such as Workday and Workfront (Adobe).
