How much do logistics engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for logistics engineering in the United States is $80,369.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,500.00 and $89,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a logistics engineer, and why are they important?

Logistics Engineers need a solid understanding of supply chain management, process optimization, and quantitative analysis, often supported by a degree in industrial or systems engineering. Familiarity with logistics management software, ERP systems, and certifications like Six Sigma or APICS are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities ensure efficient logistics operations, cost reductions, and seamless coordination across supply chains.

What do logistics engineers do?

Logistics engineers analyze and design supply chain processes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize the movement of goods. They use tools like data analysis and modeling software to develop strategies for inventory management, transportation, and distribution within organizations.

What is logistics engineering?

Logistics engineering is a field that focuses on the planning, implementation, and optimization of the movement and storage of goods, services, and information throughout the supply chain. Logistics engineers design and improve systems and processes to ensure materials and products are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively. Their work often involves analyzing supply chain operations, managing inventories, and utilizing technology to solve complex logistics challenges.

How do logistics engineers typically collaborate with other departments to optimize supply chain processes?

Logistics Engineers frequently work cross-functionally with departments such as procurement, production, IT, and transportation to streamline and improve supply chain operations. They may analyze data alongside IT teams to enhance inventory systems, coordinate with production managers to align schedules, or work with procurement to optimize vendor relationships. This collaborative approach helps identify bottlenecks, reduce costs, and increase overall efficiency, making strong communication and teamwork skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Logistics Engineering vs Supply Chain Management?

AspectLogistics EngineeringSupply Chain Management
FocusDesigning and optimizing logistics systems and processesOverseeing entire supply chain operations from procurement to delivery
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in logistics or supply chainBusiness or management degrees, certifications like CSCP or CPSM
Work EnvironmentEngineering offices, warehouses, distribution centersCross-functional, including procurement, manufacturing, and distribution
Industry UsageManufacturing, transportation, logistics companiesRetail, manufacturing, logistics, and service industries

Logistics Engineering primarily focuses on designing and improving logistics systems, while Supply Chain Management oversees the entire process from raw materials to customer delivery. Both roles require related certifications and often work within similar industries, but their scope and responsibilities differ.
