Job description

Job Title: Wilderness/Logistics Assistant

FLSA Status: Temp – FT - non-exempt
Reports to: Assistant Wilderness Director

Rate of Pay:

Benefits: Standard; Part-Time, Non-Exempt employees are eligible for but not limited to the following:

  • Sick leave benefit – 1 day per month, 12 sick days per year (accrual and availability begins at hire; sick time accrual is pro-rated for part-time hours.)

Function: To Assist with all programming components of High Peak Camp’s Wilderness summer camping program, ranging from meal preparation to assisting with Wilderness programming and supervision of campers. The Wilderness/Logistics Assistant will work to ensure the smooth operation of the Wilderness Program by working in the background to help prep and facilitate different aspects of the Wilderness program under the direction of the Wilderness Director. The High Peak Camp Wilderness summer program is to include fun and adventure, cooperative planning, improvement of health, group living, social adjustment and enrichment of spiritual values. This position will adhere to the Camp Code of Conduct, support the Christian camping and ministry culture as well as uphold the mission, and practices of The Salvation Army and its doctrine.

GENERAL DUTIES:

· Help facilitate the Wilderness summer camp program under the direction and supervision of the Wilderness Program Director and with the help of the Camp Director and Divisional Youth Secretaries.

· Responsible for the spiritual welfare of the campers and staff alongside the Wilderness Program Team and High Peak Camp Leadership.

· Help with food preparation and equipment/programming logistics for the Wilderness program.

· Assist with wilderness camp programming under the direction of the Wilderness Program Director and Assistant Wilderness Program Director.

· Attend and participate in evening programs and spiritual activities.

· Maintain a standard of cleanliness in personal grooming and in living quarters.

· Assist with the clean-up of the total camp at the end of each session and at the conclusion of the summer.

· Assist with evening cabin supervision if needed.

· Attend and participate in Staff Orientation.

· Attend and participate in all camp wide activities, campfires, staff meetings and staff devotions.

· Assist with Camper check-in and check-out.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Safety and Supervision

· Attend and participate in evening programs and spiritual activities.

· Enforce, and abide by, all camp policies and procedures

· Responsible for the health and well-being of self and campers.

· Maintain the utmost level of safety for staff and campers at all times

· Practice and enforce all camp safety regulations and emergency procedures.

  • Maintain group/staff control at specialized group activities so that other support staff can focus on safety.

· Ensure compliance with American Camping Association standards of safety and programmatic conduct at all times.

· Coordinate and implement all program components relative to the daily schedule in a timely fashion.

· Attend relevant in-service trainings.

Weekly Responsibilities

· Assist with the activities and programming of all Wilderness staff and Cabin Leaders.

· Collaborate with the Wilderness Program Staff under the direction of the Wilderness Director to plan specific weekly duties and schedule.

· Collaborate with the Wilderness Program Staff under the direction of the Wilderness Director to plan Elective Classes Schedule.

· Collaborate with the Wilderness Program Staff under the direction of the Wilderness Director to plan the Cabin Activity Schedule.

· Coordinate all other program components relative to the daily schedule.

· Coordinate with Wilderness Program Staff to maintain equipment and ensure its availability for camp programming.

· Collaborate with leadership team to ensure all staff have specific assignments well in advance.

· Coordinate Night Watch duties as they relate to the Program.

· Oversee registration day duties and trouble shoot issues as they arise.

· Work with the Wilderness Cabin Leader(s) in assignment of camper groups.

· Maintain American Camping Association standards for the camp site and program.

· Lead and assign table grace and give announcements in dining hall when necessary.

· Assist with the planning of all campfire programs including preparing, and/or delegating the preparation of, campfire devotionals and evening snacks.

  • These may include messy games, skits, and songs for campers.

· Work in a variety of program areas to support cabins as needed.

  • This may include archery, zipline, sports, etc. and will be determined by need and experience/comfort.

· Attend all relevant in-services for areas trained.

· Perform all other duties and roles assigned.

  • Due to the particular nature of the camp program in session, you may be asked to assist in duties not directly related to this specific job description. This is necessary for the smooth operation of the camp. Staff members are expected to comply with all reasonable requests.

Qualification and Education Requirements:

· Positive attitude and ability to take a leadership role.

· 21+ years of age preferred.

· Current First Aid and CPR certification (may be obtained on site).

· Experience and previous knowledge of camp activities.

· Ability to use positive behavior management techniques with campers and an ability to adapt to difficult situations with a sense of maturity and safety.

· Maintain a high standard of personal and communal living and behaviors.

· Ability to live and thrive in an outdoor, wilderness education setting.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead. Ability to operate telephone.
