What is a live out nanny?

Live out nannies are childcare professionals who care for children in the family's home but do not live with the family. Instead, they commute to and from work each day, typically following a set schedule. Their responsibilities may include supervising children, preparing meals, helping with homework, and organizing activities. Live out nannies offer flexibility for families who do not require or have space for a live-in caregiver. They are commonly employed by families who want daily support but prefer to maintain privacy in their home during non-working hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live out nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live Out Nanny, you need experience in childcare, a solid understanding of child development, and often CPR/first aid certification. Familiarity with household management tools, basic scheduling apps, and safety protocols is typically required. Patience, strong communication, and reliability are standout soft skills for building trust and rapport with both children and parents. These skills and qualities ensure a safe, nurturing, and organized environment that supports children's growth and family needs.

What are some common challenges faced by a live out nanny and how can they be managed?

Live Out Nannies often face challenges such as adapting to varying family routines, managing commutes, and maintaining clear communication with parents about expectations and schedules. Building a strong rapport with both children and parents helps ease transitions and clarify responsibilities. Establishing a consistent routine, staying organized, and proactively discussing any concerns with the family can help manage these challenges effectively. Flexibility and strong time management skills are essential for success in this role.

Job description

A loving family of three living in Redwood City, CA, is seeking a full-time live-out nanny to join their family. The child is almost 1.5 years old. The initial position is based in Redwood City, though the family might move within the Bay Area in Fall 2026. It will remain very local, to include San Mateo, Noe Valley in SF, or the Los Altos areas.  The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm, ideally, but negotiable.  The candidate should already be living locally as there is no relocation for this role.  The family is ready to hire with the latest start being July 1 and seeking longevity to grow with their family.

  • Daily childcare needs of a toddler
  • Comfortable following our child's cues while providing a predictable daily rhythm.
  • Genuinely enjoys spending time with toddlers — reading, talking, playing outdoors, supporting development, and encouraging curiosity, rather than someone who prefers a highly rigid or overly structured approach.
  • Comfort with meal prep for a toddler preferred
  • Light child-related housekeeping (tidying toys, child laundry, meal/snack prep, cleaning up after meals)

  • Warm
  • Engaged
  • Reliable
  • Loving
  • Attentive
  • Playful

  • Legal to work in the US
  • Prior toddler experience
  • Strong references required
  • CPR/first aid certification
  • Driving is a huge plus
  • College education is a strong plus.
  • Must be a native speaker in one of these languages: English, German, or Serbian speaker

  • Must already be local to the area, no relocation
  • Excellent experience and enthusiasm about toddlers is a must
  • Vaccinated for regular childhood vaccines, especially TDaP, prefer regular seasonal influenza vaccination.

The family is offering $45hr+, depending on experience.

Benefits to include:

  • Two weeks of paid time off
  • paid sick leave
  • 11 standard U.S. federal holidays are paid holidays.
  • Reimburse child-related mileage and expenses
  • Monthly QSEHRA health benefit for eligible health insurance premiums and qualified medical expenses
