About the Role

The Field Service Engineer II (FSEII) is a field-based technical expert responsible for servicing and supporting Opentrons’ liquid-handling robotics portfolio. This role owns the maintenance, repair, and performance optimization of instruments across the installed base. You will ensure customers experience seamless, reliable operation within the Opentrons ecosystem by providing expert technical service and outstanding customer support.

We are deeply customer-obsessed, and your work will have a direct impact on customer satisfaction and retention. This role requires strong technical proficiency and the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and professionally.

This is a remote, field-based role covering the West Coast with travel across the United States and Canada, and occasional international support as needed. Field Service Engineers report directly to the Senior Director, Services & Support.

What You Would Do

●       Travel to customer sites to perform service on Opentrons robotic platforms, including installation, preventive maintenance, calibration, and repairs.

●       Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and software-related failures through structured on-site evaluation.

●       Document all service activities and findings clearly and accurately in applicable systems.

●       Provide remote troubleshooting and technical guidance when feasible, escalating complex issues as appropriate.

●       Independently schedule and manage installations, maintenance, repairs, and follow-up service activities.

●       Represent Opentrons professionally while maintaining high service standards in the field.

●       Travel 60-75% or more to meet business needs.

Who We Are Looking For

Education:

●       Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, or a related major required

Experience:

●       Minimum 2–4 years of experience in a customer-facing technical service role within the life sciences or laboratory automation industry.

●       Prior experience with liquid-handling automation platforms required, with exposure to Opentrons robots a plus.

●       Experience with GitHub and/or version control tools preferred.

●       Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM tools preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

●       Ability to interpret and debug automation scripts used in liquid-handling systems; working knowledge of Python preferred.

●       Strong mechanical and hardware troubleshooting skills specific to automated liquid-handling instruments.

●       Demonstrated customer-obsessed mindset with a solutions-oriented approach.

●       Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.

●       Strong analytical, time management, and problem-solving skills.

●       Proficiency in Google Suite or equivalent productivity software.

●       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple field assignments.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

●       Fast-paced environment with dynamic scheduling and shifting service priorities.

●       60-75%+ overnight travel required, with additional travel possible to meet business demands.

●       The candidate must live near an international airport.

●       Some physical effort is required, including lifting and installing robotic instruments and associated components.


Compensation Range:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $90,000 and $100,000 per year. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.  We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including bonus, equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
