How much do life underwriter jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for life underwriter in the United States is $82,099.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,000.00 and $85,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are common challenges faced by Life Underwriters when assessing complex insurance applications?

Life Underwriters often encounter challenges when evaluating applications with incomplete information, unusual medical histories, or unique financial situations. They must carefully interpret medical records, assess risk factors, and sometimes request additional documentation to make informed decisions. Working closely with agents, medical professionals, and sometimes directly with applicants, underwriters must balance risk management with customer service. Staying current with industry guidelines and leveraging underwriting software are key to navigating these complexities effectively.

What does a life underwriter do?

A life underwriter evaluates applications for life insurance policies by assessing applicants' health, financial status, and risk factors. They analyze medical records, financial documents, and use underwriting guidelines to determine policy eligibility and premium rates, often working with specialized software and adhering to industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Life Underwriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Life Underwriter, you need a solid understanding of risk assessment, insurance principles, and medical terminology, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and industry certifications such as FLMI or ALU. Familiarity with automated underwriting systems, actuarial software, and data analysis tools is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for evaluating applications and collaborating with agents. These skills ensure accurate risk evaluation, regulatory compliance, and sound decision-making that support the company's financial stability.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Life underwriters typically do not earn $2000 a day; such high daily earnings are more common in specialized roles like top-tier investment bankers, senior corporate lawyers, or successful entrepreneurs. These positions often require extensive experience, advanced skills, and significant responsibility. Most underwriting roles offer salaries or commissions that are below this level on a daily basis.

What is the difference between Life Underwriter vs Insurance Underwriter?

Comparison Search IntentHigh overlap in job functions and industry terminologyOften compared due to similar roles in insurance underwriting

Life Underwriters and Insurance Underwriters share many credentials, work environments, and industry usage. While Life Underwriters focus specifically on life insurance policies, Insurance Underwriters may evaluate a broader range of insurance products. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, making them closely related in the insurance industry.

What jobs pay $10,000 a month without a degree?

Life underwriters typically do not earn $10,000 a month without specialized experience or certifications, as their salaries usually depend on commissions and experience. High-paying roles in sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship can reach this level without a degree, but they often require strong skills, networking, and proven performance. Most jobs paying this amount without a degree involve commission-based income or self-employment in fields like sales, consulting, or business ownership.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

Life underwriters typically do not earn $500,000 annually, but high-level executive roles such as chief executives, investment bankers, and specialized surgeons can reach or exceed this income level. These positions often require extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes certification or licensing, and they usually involve high responsibility and long hours.

This role requires deep technical expertise, sound judgment, and strong partnership with the field.  If you thrive on complexity, and are known for your leadership and decision-making skills, we’d love to talk with you.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary: $86,000 - $114,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.
  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match.

  • Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Underwrite highly complex individual life cases with significant mortality and financial impact, including formal applications, and pre-quote requests, within a life approval authority of $5 million+.
  • Offer expert evaluation and guiding decisions beyond the authority of junior underwriters.
  • Review, approve, and provide guidance on underwriting decisions made by other underwriters, ensuring adherence to company guidelines, selection standards, and risk philosophy.
  • Partner closely with agents, brokers, and field leadership, communicating underwriting decisions clearly and professionally while building strong, trusted relationships.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by mentoring underwriters, monitoring workflow quality and volume, contributing to underwriting guidelines, and staying current on products, regulations, and industry trends.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Extensive individual life underwriting experience, including impaired risks and large case underwriting, with demonstrated success operating at full authority levels.
  • 5+ years of life underwriting experience, with the confidence and judgment to make and defend complex underwriting decisions using sound medical, financial, and actuarial reasoning.
  • Experience working under pressure while maintaining attention to detail, sound judgment, and compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Strong technical foundation, including completion of LOMA 280/281, 290, 311, 386, and ALU 101 & 201 (or equivalent depth of knowledge).
  • Excellent decision-making, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain underwriting outcomes to both internal partners and the field.
  • High level of independence and accountability, paired with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under deadline pressure.
  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; FLMI, FALU, CLU designation completed or in progress.
  • Experience with Accelerated Underwriting programs and/or Long-Term Care underwriting.
  • Prior involvement in field training, underwriting policy development, or special underwriting initiatives.
