Job Summary
A Director of Library Services provides strategic leadership, managing all daily operations, budget, staff and technology, while serving as the primary liaison to boards or administration. Key duties include strategic planning, collection management, community outreach and ensuring equitable access to resources, often requiring an ALA accredited Master of Library Science (MLS).
Essential Job Duties
  • Develop long-range goals, policies and procedures in collaboration with a board of trustees or administration to align with user needs.
  • Prepare, justifies, and administers the library budget, including grant applications and fundraising initiatives.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate library staff and volunteers, set performance standards.
  • Oversee acquisition, curation and access to print, digital and media resources. Implements and updates information technologies.
  • Promote library services through marketing, public relations and outreach programs to community members, students or faculty.
  • Ensure the safety, maintenance and compliance of the library building and grounds.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: A Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program is standard for high-level position often with a bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: Several years of progressively responsible professional library experience, including supervisory experience.

Physical Demands
  • Position requires mobility for navigating the facility, the ability to lift/move up to 25 pounds and significant time in front of computer screens.
