The City of Falls Church is recruiting a library page to regularly work 10 hours per week (including a weekend shift), with occasional opportunities for additional hours, not to exceed 19 hours per week. This is a temporary, year-round position at the Mary Riley Styles Public Library (MRSPL). Library pages are part of the Library Circulation Department and perform routine work, including basic clerical duties which are performed under supervision of library staff. This announcement may be used to fill other library page vacancies at MRSPL consisting of at least 5 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Shelve books and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal System, by genre and/or alphabetically.
  • Shift, straighten, re-shelve, and shelf-read materials to keep the collection tidy and easy to find.
  • Limited public service including directional questions as required.
  • Clean books and shelves as needed.
  • Collect book drop as necessary.
  • Check in materials as necessary.
  • Identify damaged materials on shelf and during the check-in process to be evaluated by selectors.
  • Assist with collection inventory if needed.
  • Assist with curbside deliveries.
  • Perform related tasks as required and/or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Able to pass a brief shelving quiz related to different organizational sections of the library.
  • Able to accurately sort using the Dewey Decimal System and alphabet to shelve books accordingly.
  • Some experience preferred with the procedures, practices and equipment of a public library.
  • Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good communication skills and detail oriented.
  • Self-starter with good organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Library staff and patrons.
  • Ability to work more than 10 hours/week when the library is in need (not to exceed 19 hours/week).

Hours: 10 hours regularly each week on weekends and weekdays. This announcement may be used to fill other temporary page vacancies at MRSPL consisting of at least 5 hours per week.

Salary: $16.69 per hour. This is a temporary, year-round position with no benefits.
