DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to provide patron assistance by operating the service desk, handling room reservations, item circulation, and other assorted tasks as needed in the daily operations of the library.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Operates the service desk in the library, occasionally alone.
  • Routinely inspects the library, cleaning and rearranging as needed to ensure a clean environment.
  • Uses Koha to fulfill check in/check out procedures as needed, including for technology, textbook, and journal requests.
  • Monitors library chat function to assist patrons online with questions or direct them to a librarian for assistance as necessary.
  • Operates LibCal to assist library patrons with room reservations; additionally, monitors users of study rooms to ensure compliance with library guidelines and policies.
  • Performs organizational tasks like reshelving checked-in titles to the proper location on library shelves and routinely shelf-reads to ensure books are correctly organized according to library standards.
  • Assists with other less common tasks like shelf shifting, rearranging of study spaces as needed, and data tracking.
  • Assists library users with issues pertaining to printing, PaperCut, and computer station usage.
  • Exemplifies the Vision, Mission and Values of the college and is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion in the college community.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Currently enrolled in a Mercy College program as a student.
  • Ability to commit to 10-20 hours of library work per week as needed, on a schedule to be determined by worker and Library Director based upon student availability and library need.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills to interact with other students and library workers in a professional manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with customer service is a bonus.
  • Experience with/familiarity with libraries and bookstores either as an employee or patron will help acclimate to the position smoothly.
