Job description

Summary Under immediate supervision, performs routine library support duties to help keep the library collection organized, accessible, and in good condition. Responsibilities include sorting and shelving library materials, maintaining neat and orderly shelves, assisting with basic processing of materials, helping with library programs and displays, and performing other support duties as assigned. Example of Duties ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties are representative of the position.

Other duties may be assigned as needed. Sorts library materials alphabetically, numerically, and according to established shelving procedures. Sorts returned materials on book carts and accurately reshelves materials in their proper locations.

Shelf-reads and straightens books and other materials to maintain an orderly and accessible collection. Empties the book drop and delivers returned materials to the appropriate location for processing. Assists with checking in library materials, as directed and authorized by library staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Must be currently enrolled in high school and have completed the equivalent of at least the freshman year. No previous library experience is required.

Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for employment of minors, including obtaining a work permit when required. Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, and willing to work scheduled hours. Additional Details Ability to learn and follow established library procedures.

Ability to accurately sort, organize, and shelve library materials. Ability to learn and apply basic library shelving and classification practices, including the Dewey Decimal System. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with library staff, patrons, and other members of the public. Ability to work independently on routine assignments. Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain accuracy.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron information. Ability to maintain a dependable and regular work schedule. Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of the position. Frequently stands and walks throughout the library. Frequently bends, stoops, kneels, crouches, twists, reaches, and handles library materials.

Climbs and descends a short step stool. Lifts and carries materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Pushes and pulls book carts or other wheeled equipment containing materials weighing approximately 60-80 pounds.

Repeatedly reaches, grasps, lifts, and places library materials on shelves at varying heights. Performs repetitive movements associated with sorting, shelving, and handling library materials. Ability to communicate with staff and patrons and hear sufficiently to perform assigned duties.

Ability to read labels, books, notices, and other printed materials and perform work requiring near vision.
