How much do legal typist jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for legal typist in the United States is $38,936.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $34,000.00 and $41,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Legal Typist typically interact with attorneys and paralegals during a standard workday?

Legal Typists work closely with attorneys and paralegals by transcribing dictated recordings, preparing legal documents, and ensuring all paperwork is formatted according to legal standards. They often receive daily assignments via email or task management systems and may attend brief meetings to clarify document requirements. Collaboration is essential, as Legal Typists must communicate proactively to resolve ambiguities, ensure deadlines are met, and maintain the accuracy and confidentiality of legal documents. This teamwork helps support the smooth operation of legal cases and office workflows.

What is a typist job salary?

The salary for a legal typist typically ranges from $30,000 to $50,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and employer. Many legal typists earn additional benefits and may work full-time or part-time schedules, often requiring proficiency in legal terminology and typing skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Legal Typist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Typist, you need fast and accurate typing skills, a strong understanding of legal terminology, and familiarity with legal document formats, typically supported by a high school diploma or legal secretarial training. Proficiency with word processing software (such as Microsoft Word), transcription equipment, and legal management systems is essential. Attention to detail, discretion, and strong organizational skills set exceptional legal typists apart. These abilities ensure the timely, confidential, and precise preparation of legal documents critical to effective legal practice.

Is it better to be a paralegal or legal assistant?

Legal assistants and paralegals both support attorneys, but paralegals typically have more advanced training and perform more complex legal tasks, often requiring certification or specialized education. Legal assistants usually handle administrative duties and support tasks, with less emphasis on legal research or drafting. The choice depends on career goals and the level of responsibility desired in a legal support role.

Is it worth earning money by typing?

Legal typists can earn income by transcribing legal documents, which often requires attention to detail and knowledge of legal terminology. The pay rate varies based on experience, location, and complexity of tasks, but it can provide a steady income for those with strong typing skills and familiarity with legal procedures.

What are legal typists?

Legal typists are specialized administrative professionals who transcribe legal documents, correspondence, and audio recordings for law firms, courts, or legal departments. They ensure that all legal documents are accurately formatted and free of errors, often working with legal terminology and adhering to strict confidentiality standards. Legal typists play a vital role in supporting attorneys and paralegals by producing timely and precise legal documentation.
