How much do legal research writing jobs pay per hour?
What is legal research writing?
A Legal Research Writing job involves researching legal issues, analyzing case law, statutes, and regulations, and drafting documents such as legal memoranda, briefs, or contracts. Professionals in this field work for law firms, government agencies, or corporations to provide well-researched legal content. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in legal writing are essential for success in this role.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed for legal research writing?
To thrive in Legal Research Writing, a strong background in legal analysis, research methodologies, and clear, precise legal writing is essential, often supported by a law degree or paralegal certification. Familiarity with legal databases like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and document management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines are standout soft skills. These qualities ensure accuracy, clarity, and reliability in producing legal documents and supporting attorneys or legal teams effectively.
What are typical projects or assignments handled in legal research writing?
Legal Research Writers commonly work on drafting legal memoranda, preparing briefs, summarizing case law, and compiling legislative or regulatory histories for attorneys. They may also assist in synthesizing large volumes of legal documents and performing cite-checking for accuracy and proper formatting. Collaboration is frequent with attorneys, paralegals, and compliance teams to ensure written work meets legal standards and client requirements. Due to the diverse nature of legal issues, writers are often challenged to quickly grasp new legal topics and present them in a clear, persuasive manner.

Job description
POSITION: Legal Research Analyst
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Client Solutions Group
SUPERVISOR: Director of Knowledge Management and Research
SUMMARY:
The Legal Research Analyst serves as a trusted expert resource at the intersection of legal knowledge, information science, and client service, delivering sophisticated research support that underpins the Firm’s important matters. Leveraging deep expertise across legal, legislative, and company research databases, the Analyst partners directly with attorneys, paralegals, and business services teams to translate complex research questions into precise, actionable answers under tight deadlines. Beyond day-to-day reference support, the Analyst shapes how the Firm discovers, evaluates, and adopts research tools and technologies, piloting new products, building durable knowledge resources, and training colleagues to work smarter. Empowered to manage a demanding and varied caseload with autonomy, the Analyst is equally comfortable providing white-glove service to a single requestor and producing firmwide thought leadership on emerging industry issues. Candidates who take pride in research excellence, thrive on solving hard information problems, and want their expertise to directly shape client outcomes are encouraged to apply. This position operates within Baker Donelson's Client Solutions and Innovation Group, provides research services firm-wide under general supervision and according to Firm policies and procedures, and reports to the Director of Knowledge Management and Research.

- Own the full lifecycle of reference inquiries, from promptly self-assigning requests and corresponding with requestors to accurately recording completed research in the Firm's research queue.
- Apply proficient legal, legislative, and company research expertise to resolve complex, high-stakes questions across the Firm's practice areas and jurisdictions.
- Produce content on industry hot topics, as needed, to keep attorneys and clients informed on emerging developments.
- Build and maintain current awareness newsletters, alerts, and legislative tracking to keep stakeholders ahead of developments that affect their matters.
- Knowledge Enablement and Training
- Instruct attorneys and staff on the best use of research materials and online databases, elevating firmwide research fluency.
- Create user reference guides, training programs, and other resources that promote awareness and equip end-users to conduct research more effectively.
- Maintain up-to-date research resources across practice group sites, proactively reflecting changes and additions across the various databases.
- Actively engage in continuous professional development to sustain expert-level knowledge and stay ahead of changes and enhancements to all Firm resources.
- Innovation and Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Participate in pilot programs evaluating new research products and testing emerging applications, helping shape the Firm's research technology roadmap.
- Partner with Firm leadership to drive research strategy and product development, ensuring the Firm's research capabilities remain best-in-class.
- Collaborate with the Client Solutions and Innovation Group, Marketing & Business Development, and other departments on cross-functional projects and assignments.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
