Job Description

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Amcor Central R&D Laboratory provides chemical and materials testing to support technology research, product development and manufacturing process improvement in North America and globally.

The Senior Lab Scientist executes requested lab analysis by applying known methods and practices to perform competitive analysis, troubleshoot manufacturing issues and support R&D programs. The senior scientist is responsible for instrument maintenance, method development and documentation. The senior scientist takes added responsibility for mentoring less senior lab scientists, global networking and identifying and purchasing new lab instrumentation.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

  • Develop testing expertise across a wide array of instruments following known methods
    • Chemical and polymer analysis to understand raw materials and competitive products
    • Provide analytical support to manufacturing to resolve claims or production issues
  • Prepare and publish lab reports for R&D, manufacturing, sales and marketing
  • Lead discussions with manufacturing and customers to determine testing needs and explain data. Be viewed as technical expert by these groups.
  • Conduct instrument/method training for several areas of testing
  • Be equipment owner for more advanced instruments (Thermal, Nitrite, Raman, GC, SEM, etc). Take responsibility for preventative maintenance and repair of assigned lab equipment. Work with instrument vendors as needed
  • Assist in method documentation and suggest improvements to existing methods. Develop and document new analytical test methods
  • Order supplies for the lab and submit documentation through the p-card process; work with procurement to order supplies/instruments for the lab and other departments using Purchase Orders. Provide purchasing support to leader as needed
  • May participate in organizations such as American Chemical Society or ASTM
  • Identify opportunities to improve lab capability, efficiency, service, etc.
  • Review and approve testing done by technicians
  • Independently develop testing protocol to solve problems. Correlate laboratory tests to end-use performance
  • Mentor less senior lab scientists
  • Participate in staff interviews
  • Be recognized as internal expert in at least one area of testing
    • Understand limitations of instruments & methods - work with lab customers to understand level of precision/discrimination required and capability to meet customer need
    • Improve methods and method repeatability through statistical analysis
    • Document and communicate new learnings to lab team and broader organization to advance overall capability
  • Network with other laboratories through one or more of the following:
    • Global Amcor Labs: communicate and share best practices
    • Organizations such as American Chemical Society or ASTM
    • Raw material or equipment suppliers
    • University or contract labs
  • Advance the capability of the lab. Document research proposals (scope, plan, cost, relevance) and work with lab manager to select research programs that are aligned with business need.
  • Evaluation and purchase of new lab instrumentation
  • Method development (literature review, research & statistical validation)
  • Understanding and leveraging expertise of partner labs

  • Graduate degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering with research/coursework experience in polymers. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering with 8-10 years of industry related experience
  • Understanding of statistical tools such as DOE, Gage R&R
  • Conversant in polymer materials, processing and packaging terminology
