Job description

Kelly Government Solutions is a strategic supplier and business partner to the federal government and its key suppliers.  Through our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Kelly Government Solutions offers administrative, IT, engineering, scientific, and healthcare professionals the opportunity to work with the leading medical research center in the world.  We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (Blood Bank) to support the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. 
 
This is a long-term contract position which offers:

LOGISTICS
Shift: Training will occur during the day shift.  Role may involve rotating shifts (mix of day and afternoon/evening) including holidays and weekend shifts to ensure sufficient coverage to maintain 24/7 operations.  Schedules are planned 1-2 months in advance.
Work Location: NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD
KEY TASKS 
(1) Independently provide clinical lab support services to NIH Clinical Center in the Department of Transfusion Medicine
(2) Perform specialized and technically demanding serologic and molecular immunohematologic procedures for clinical diagnostic transfusion support and research purposes. 
(3) Perform laboratory testing pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements
(4) Evaluate blood transfusion orders for appropriateness based on screening criteria
(5) Communicate with patients, nurses, and physicians to clarify questionable transfusion or testing orders
(6) Perform compatibility cross-matching testing of donor and patient-recipient samples using automated and manual methods
(7) Independently resolve routine RBC blood group antibody problems 
(8) Perform moderately complex testing in consultation with technical specialist
(9) Perform component manufacturing duties including prepare blood components such as frozen plasma, leuko-reduced RBC, and buffy coats from whole blood collections and pathogen reduced platelets
(10) Perform lot release and labeling for blood components
(11) Manage blood inventory, arranging for import/export of necessary blood components
REQUIREMENTS
(1) Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or discipline related to clinical laboratory science
(2) Minimum of three (3) years of blood bank experience preferred
(3) Certification through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)
(4) Availability for training during the day shift and flexibility to cover shifts as needed to ensure sufficient coverage including weekends and holiday shifts (scheduled in advance)
