What is a junior recruiter?

A junior recruiter works in the Human Resources department of a company to assist with the hiring process. As a junior recruiter, you play a significant role in finding the right candidates for job openings. Other duties include posting job openings, screening resumes, contacting candidates, scheduling interviews, and coordinating background and drug tests. Typically reporting to a senior recruiter, you work with both candidates and hiring managers frequently, so you need to have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. You also complete on-the-job training to learn about the company’s specific Human Resources policies. It’s not uncommon for junior recruiters to build relationships with local hiring managers and look for potential candidates through their own research.

What does a junior recruiter do?

A Junior Recruiter assists with the hiring process by sourcing and screening candidates, scheduling interviews, and supporting senior recruiters in various administrative tasks. They often help draft job postings, review resumes, and communicate with applicants. Their role is essential in ensuring a smooth and efficient recruitment process for the organization. Junior Recruiters also learn about company culture and hiring needs to better identify suitable candidates, making this position a great starting point for a career in human resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Recruiter, you need a basic understanding of recruitment processes, strong organizational skills, and at least a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), resume databases, and recruiting platforms like LinkedIn is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly help you build strong relationships with candidates and hiring managers. These skills are crucial for efficiently sourcing and placing top talent, ensuring a positive candidate experience, and supporting overall business growth.

What are some common challenges faced by junior recruiters in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior recruiters often face challenges such as balancing a high volume of open positions, quickly learning to screen candidates effectively, and adapting to fast-changing client or hiring manager needs. They may also find it difficult to build strong relationships with both candidates and internal teams. To overcome these challenges, new recruiters should focus on developing strong organizational skills, seek feedback from senior team members, and actively participate in training sessions. Building open communication channels with hiring managers and leveraging mentorship within the recruitment team can also accelerate their learning curve and success.

At Sugar Mountain, we believe great people build great businesses. We're looking for a Recruiter who is passionate about connecting exceptional talent with meaningful opportunities across our growing family of brands.

You'll serve as a trusted partner to hiring managers, help shape our employer brand, create outstanding candidate experiences, and build talent pipelines that support our long-term growth. You'll recruit for a wide range of roles across the organization, from operations and manufacturing to sales, marketing, finance, technology, and leadership positions.
This role is based in Seattle, Washington and requires an on-site presence five days per week
What You'll Do
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to understand business needs and develop effective recruiting strategies.
  • Own the full recruitment lifecycle, including sourcing, screening, interviewing, coordinating feedback, and managing offers.
  • Proactively identify and engage top talent through networking, referrals, social media, industry connections, and creative sourcing strategies.
  • Build and maintain talent pipelines for current and future hiring needs.
  • Deliver a positive, responsive, and professional candidate experience from first contact through onboarding.
  • Support recruiting events, career fairs, networking opportunities, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Help identify candidates who align with our values, culture, and performance expectations.
  • Contribute to strengthening Sugar Mountain's employer brand across all candidate touchpoints.
  • Stay informed on recruiting trends, labor market conditions, and talent acquisition best practices.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience.
  • Experience sourcing candidates through LinkedIn, Indeed, referrals, networking, and other creative channels.
  • Proficiency with applicant tracking systems (ATS) and recruiting technologies.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to connect authentically with people at all levels.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple searches simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and recruiting best practices.
  • Resourceful, curious, and creative in finding and attracting great talent.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities can shift quickly.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
  • They hold a high bar for talent and know how to identify both capability and culture add.
  • They build trust quickly with candidates and hiring managers.
  • They are proactive, resilient, and don't wait for great candidates to apply.
  • They genuinely enjoy helping people find the right opportunity and helping teams build for the future.
  • They take ownership, communicate clearly, and follow through on commitments.
