Job description

Job Title:         Tool Designer
Client:              Heavy Machine Manufacturing Company
Location:         Waterloo, IA 50703
Duration:         24 Months (Extension/Conversion Possible)
Shift:                1st Shift (6:00 AM – 2:30 PM + OT)

Job Summary

Designs and delivers complex tooling solutions that directly impact manufacturing efficiency. Owns the lifecycle from concept → design → build → shop validation, with strong shop-floor collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design tooling, fixtures, gauges, and assemblies
  • Lead tooling development for new and revised products
  • Collaborate with machinists, welders, and suppliers
  • Drive manufacturable, cost-effective design decisions

Core Duties

  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings
  • Apply GD&T and tolerance stack-ups effectively
  • Design for machining, assembly, and real-world usage
  • Support tool builds (internal + external suppliers)
  • Participate in design reviews and mentor junior designers
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and implement improvements
  • Manage revisions, documentation, and change control

Technical Focus

  • Tooling design (fixtures, gauges, stamping tools)
  • CAD modeling (Creo / SolidWorks)
  • GD&T and tolerance optimization
  • Lean manufacturing and process improvement

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Tool Design experience (preferred)
  • Strong CAD experience (Creo / Solid modeling)
  • Knowledge of machining, fabrication, and assembly processes
  • Engineering background or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work independently and guide others

Preferred Skills

  • Programming exposure (C++, Python, SQL)
  • Project management experience
