What are Junior Counsel?

Junior Counsel are early-career legal professionals, often lawyers or barristers, who assist senior attorneys with legal research, drafting documents, and preparing cases for court. They work under the supervision of more experienced counsel and help manage case files, analyze legal issues, and communicate with clients. This role provides valuable training and experience for those who aspire to become senior legal advisors or specialize in particular areas of law.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Counsel, you need a law degree, admission to the bar, and a solid understanding of legal research, drafting, and litigation support. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), document management systems, and case management software is typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help Junior Counsel stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for providing accurate legal support, ensuring compliance, and contributing effectively to case preparation and client service.

What types of projects and legal matters can a Junior Counsel expect to handle in their first year?

As a Junior Counsel, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks, such as drafting and reviewing contracts, conducting legal research, preparing case files, and assisting senior lawyers with litigation or transactional matters. You will likely be involved in supporting due diligence, regulatory compliance, and risk assessment processes. This role often requires close collaboration with other legal team members and departments, giving you exposure to different aspects of the law and valuable mentorship opportunities. The diversity of projects helps build your foundational legal skills and understanding of the organization's business.

Job description

About the Role

Bask is looking for a curious, business-minded attorney to join our team and help navigate the evolving landscape of DTC telehealth and B2B healthtech software. You will support the General Counsel by handling general legal work and company-wide compliance matters, including the development of legal and risk management strategies. This is a highly cross-functional role where youโ€™ll work closely with leadership across product, operations, human resources and compliance to support and scale a fast-growing platform. This position requires a strong blend of legal and business acumen to balance competing priorities.

Youโ€™ll be deeply embedded in the business โ€” advising on real-time decisions, translating complex regulations into practical guidance, and helping ensure we build quickly and responsibly. If you enjoy solving complex problems, thinking beyond the textbook, and working alongside operators, this role is for you.

At Bask Health, every role is AI-first. Work starts in an LLM to clarify intent and context, moves into the right tools to explore and execute, is tested with real users and stakeholders, and is continuously refined as we learn. AI and self-serve research are default parts of how we work, not side experiments.

We are looking for people who take full ownership of their work, treat AI as a real collaborator, and care deeply about building a company that meaningfully improves how healthcare is delivered.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Corporate, Commercial & Operational Support

  • Provide legal counsel on corporate and commercial transactions, business development, employment matters, and intellectual property.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate vendor, partner, and service agreements, including complex enterprise SaaS contracts.
  • Support product and engineering teams in building compliant, scalable solutions.
  • Maintain and update customer agreements, terms of use, privacy policies, and related documentation.
  • Interface with and manage outside counsel resources.

Regulatory & Compliance

  • Advise on healthcare, data security, HIPAA, state privacy, FDA, FTC, DEA, fintech and AI-related regulations impacting Baskโ€™s software platform.
  • Design/improve risk-based compliance programs and initiatives to enable thoughtful, compliant growth.
  • Partner with compliance and operations on risk assessments, audits, and workflows.
  • Review user-facing content, product flows, and marketing materials.
  • Stay ahead of regulatory changes and proactively guide the business.

Legal Workflow Transformation

  • Identify repeatable legal work and convert it into structured decision workflows, templates and playbooks.
  • Transform legal work from reactive to proactive by creating systems for addressing foreseeable legal obstacles and their solutions, including alternatives.
  • Continuously evaluate how legal support can scale with business growth.

AI

  • Work AI-first: Use LLMs as your starting point โ€” to clarify thinking, draft output, research problems, and move faster. Apply your own judgment to refine quality and make it count.
  • Validate and iterate: Test your work with real users and stakeholders. Use what you learn to improve before problems become patterns.
  • Share AI-native workflows: Document prompts, processes, and workflows that work. Share them across your team so we raise the bar together.

Requirements

Who You Are
  • JD with active bar membership.
  • 2โ€“6+ years of experience in healthcare, fintech, or a regulatory environment, preferably including both law firm and in-house legal department roles.
  • Strong working knowledge of conducting legal research and monitoring legislative activity.
  • Comfortable working independently and partnering across teams.

Youโ€™re someone who:

  • Has an entrepreneurial mindset with strong respect for all areas of risk management.
  • Is naturally curious and wants to understand how products actually work.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, startup environment.
  • Is action-oriented with an ability to navigate ambiguity and take initiative.
  • Prioritizes well, takes ownership, and follows through.
  • Translates legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance for internal teams.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally by encouraging and building consensus.
  • Is team-oriented with a strong work-ethic.

Benefits

  • Benefits (for U.S.-based full-time employees)
    • 50% medical, dental & vision insurance coverage for you
    • 401k
    • Unlimited PTO
    • Unlimited AI token usage
  • Health and Wellness stipend
  • In-office perks: lunch, snacks, drinks, and more
  • Budget for intra-office travel
