Junior Contractor information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Contractor, you need a foundational understanding of construction practices, site safety, and project documentation, often supported by a relevant degree or trade certification. Familiarity with tools such as project management software, blueprints, and basic hand or power tools is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining project quality, adhering to deadlines, and ensuring workplace safety while gaining experience in the construction industry.

What are junior contractors?

Junior contractors are entry-level professionals who work on a contractual basis, often assisting with specific tasks or projects under the supervision of more experienced staff. They typically have limited experience in their field and are hired to support teams by performing basic duties, learning on the job, and gaining practical experience. Junior contractors may work in various industries such as construction, IT, or consulting, and their responsibilities can vary depending on the project's needs. Their role often serves as a stepping stone to more senior positions within the industry.

The main difference between a Junior Contractor and an Apprentice Contractor is experience and training level. Junior Contractors are more experienced, capable of handling tasks independently, while Apprentice Contractors are still learning and working under supervision. Both roles are essential in construction and contracting industries, but they differ in responsibilities and skill development stages.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Contractors when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Contractors often encounter challenges such as adapting to varied project requirements, managing time across multiple assignments, and learning to communicate effectively with clients and team members. To overcome these, it's helpful to seek mentorship from experienced colleagues, actively participate in team meetings to clarify expectations, and use organizational tools to track tasks and deadlines. Emphasizing continuous learning and being open to feedback will also help you build confidence and grow in the role.

Job description

Description
The Offer: You don't need to know how to swing a hammer. You need to know how to keep promises, keep schedules, and keep people moving. HEI is creating a brand new Junior Project Manager role: a 12 to 18-month paid development track that takes a sharp, organized, accountable person with zero construction background and builds them into a full Project Manager running their own jobs. We pay you to learn. We pay for your certifications. We map your path. Then we promote you.
If you've been managing a restaurant, running an office, handling military logistics, coordinating events, or running point on retail operations, and you're ready for a real career trajectory in a growing business, keep reading.
What We Offer:
  • Compensation: $50,000 to $60,000 starting salary, depending on transferable skills
  • Defined Raise Path: Milestone-based raises during the development track. Target at full PM transition (months 12 to 18): $65,000 or higher.
  • Real Career Trajectory: Junior PM โ†’ Project Manager โ†’ Senior PM โ†’ Operations Manager. This role exists because we're scaling, not because we need a seat filled.
  • Paid Training: OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, JobTread certification, and ongoing professional development, all paid by HEI
  • Direct Mentorship: You work side by side with our Senior PM. Real coaching, real feedback, real reps.
  • Roth Simple IRA with company match
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • HRA healthcare support
  • Mileage reimbursement or company vehicle use
  • Ground floor opportunity in a Fort Wayne residential contractor scaling to triple revenue by 2030
  • Direct access to ownership. No corporate ladder before your voice is heard.

Responsibilities
โ€ข Shadow our Senior PM on active jobs, learning sequencing, scheduling, budgets, and client communication from day one
โ€ข Build and maintain project schedules in JobTread (we'll train you on the software)
โ€ข Track project budgets, change orders, and daily logs
โ€ข Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors. Confirm deliveries, schedule trades, and follow up on permits.
โ€ข Walk job sites with the PM, learning to read what's done well, what's behind, and what needs attention
โ€ข Sit in client meetings. Gradually take over communication on smaller jobs as you earn it.
โ€ข Document progress through JobTread and CompanyCam
โ€ข By months 12 to 18, run small projects ($25K to $75K) under PM oversight
Qualifications
$42
