A Junior Automation Engineer is an entry-level professional who helps design, develop, and maintain automated systems and processes within industries such as manufacturing, IT, or software development. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers, assisting with tasks like programming automated equipment, troubleshooting system errors, and ensuring machinery operates efficiently. This role requires a basic understanding of automation technologies, programming languages, and problem-solving skills. Junior Automation Engineers often gain hands-on experience and training to advance their expertise and career within the automation field.

What does a junior automation engineer do?

A junior automation engineer develops processes for sophisticated automation equipment. In this role, you may design technologies for multiple platforms, including manufacturing and production. You set up and troubleshoot sophisticated automation tools and systems. Your responsibilities include procuring new equipment, defining specifications, unit testing, and implementation. Other duties include coding applications that enable physical devices or embed systems and debugging any problems that arise. You create procedures, provide training on related equipment and processes, interface with vendors and technical support on equipment issues and maintenance, and improve new production processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior automation engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Automation Engineer, you need a foundation in programming (such as Python or Java), engineering principles, and a relevant degree such as electrical or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with automation tools like PLCs, SCADA systems, and testing frameworks, as well as certifications like ISA CAP, are typically expected. About the Role

As a Senior Solutions Engineer, you’ll be a technical leader in deploying and scaling our robotic systems across varied customer environments. You will own integration from API to hardware, mentor teammates, and influence the future of our robotic platform through direct field experience and technical leadership. You’ll architect end-to-end solutions, deeply collaborate with customers, and work with internal teams to drive both deployment success and long-term product improvements.

  • Develop software integrations using Python, REST API and MQTT.
  • Design mechatronics systems and industrial automation that adapts customer applications to Digit’s capabilities
  • Integrate IoT devices with customer equipment including PLCs, conveyors, sensors, etc.
  • Lead on-site commissioning, field testing, and iterative problem‑solving with minimal supervision
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on product capabilities, APIs, and behavior across internal and customer teams
  • Develop custom tools, scripts, or software modules to extend robotic functionality for specific applications
  • Identify root causes of systemic issues and partner with engineering for long-term resolution
  • Guide and support go‑to‑market efforts for new features and early deployments, including field validation
  • Collaborate directly with customers to scope technical requirements and adapt site conditions for robotic success
  • Partner with Product and Systems Engineering to provide field‑based feedback that shapes our roadmap
  • Deliver advanced training and documentation to both internal teams and external customers
  • Design reusable, scalable integration templates for future deployments
  • Mentor junior and mid‑level team members, driving process improvements and integration best practices
  • Travel ~20‑50% to support customer deployments, pilots, and field testing initiatives
About You
  • BS/MS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering or a related technical field (or equivalent hands‑on experience)
  • 6+ years of experience deploying robotics or automation systems in real‑world environments
  • Experience designing mechatronics systems or industrial automation
  • Expertise in Python, networking, and hardware/software system interfacing
  • Proven track record solving hard technical problems at the intersection of automation and customer needs
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; able to drive alignment across engineering, product, and external stakeholders
  • Passion for building scalable systems and driving real product improvements from field experience
  • Comfortable owning complex projects independently and mentoring others
  • Willing and able to travel up to 50% of the time
Bonus Points
  • Experience with Linux
  • Led pilots or customer‑focused technical programs in robotics or automation
  • Familiarity with ROS, safety standards, electromechanical systems, or industrial networks
  • Advanced programming skills (C++, TypeScript, Kotlin, etc.)
  • Experience contributing to SDKs, developer tools, or integration frameworks
  • Built reusable deployment tooling or scalable field support systems
