Job description

Position Summary:

The Medical Lab Scientist performs a wide range of complex laboratory analyses to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing patient care within Trinity Health. This role works across multiple laboratory disciplines-including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, and blood banking-using advanced instrumentation and standardized testing methodologies. The Medical Lab Scientist ensures timely and precise test results by adhering to established quality, safety, and regulatory procedures. Working collaboratively with laboratory colleagues and clinical care teams, the position contributes to reliable diagnostic information, consistent laboratory operations, and continuous improvement of laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and validate complex laboratory tests across assigned clinical disciplines in accordance with established protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor specimen integrity, quality control performance, and instrument functionality to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Document and report test findings promptly using the laboratory information system, escalating critical values per policy.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to support ongoing operational readiness.
  • Collaborate with providers, nursing staff, and fellow laboratory personnel to address testing needs and support coordinated patient care.
  • Participate in competency assessments, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Possess or is eligible to receive laboratory certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • If certification is not held upon hire, it must be completed within 12 months of employment.
  • Evidence of ND State license or ND Provisional Permit.
  • Individuals hired with ND Provisional Permit must obtain ND State license within 12 months of employment.

Educational Requirements:

  • BS in Medical Laboratory Science, clinical laboratoryscience or Medical Technology.
  • Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where degree was received.

Experience Requirements:

  • Clinical Internship required.
  • Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:

  • None other than those required in Clinical Internship.

Physical Requirements:

The Medical Lab Scientist is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, and handle specimens and laboratory supplies throughout the shift. The role involves repetitive hand movements, operation of laboratory instruments, and occasional lifting or carrying of items such as reagent containers or equipment. Adequate vision, color perception, hearing, and fine motor coordination are essential for performing detailed analytical tasks and safely managing laboratory materials.

Environmental Requirements:

Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with routine exposure to biological specimens, chemical reagents, and infectious disease risks.
