Job description

Job Summary This full-time position will perform legal work representing the State of Maryland in the District Court and/or Circuit Court for St. Mary's County, Maryland. Assists in the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.

Conducts proper preparation, research, and analysis. Communicates and confers with victims and witnesses. Provides legal representation and guidance to proper parties.

Creates and handles court documents. Serves on a wide variety of additional legal matters and performs other duties as assigned. Please Attach Cover Letter, Resume and List of References.

Essential Functions Represent the State of Maryland in the prosecution of criminal matters for St. Mary's County, Maryland; Advise and assist law enforcement officers and agencies on legal matters throughout the course of criminal investigations, to include charging decisions; Appear in court and related forums to select juries, present evidence, examine witnesses, make legal arguments, and act as an advocate for the State of Maryland; Draft and file necessary documents; Identify and prepare evidence for use in Court; Prepare, research, and analyze cases; Develop knowledge and expertise in the area of criminal law; Work professionally and effectively representing the Office of the State's Attorney at all times; Ensure confidentiality of information and records; Supervise, coordinate, train, and provide legal guidance to administrative staff (i.e. case managers, legal assistants, victim witness, evidence review unit, investigators, paralegals, interns, etc.); Coordinate closely with partners in law enforcement agencies and information technology for the advancement and improved technical support, evaluation of tools, and development of best practices; Apply expertise, skills and education to respond to e-discovery and other electronically stored-information requests; Keep ahead of changes in the field of e-discovery and training/informing management, attorneys, and discovery team on changes in the law and e-discovery practices; Work with law enforcement agencies, staff members, and the general public; Appear in Court for trials, pleas, hearing, sentencings, and any other Court appearances are requested; Comply with St

Mary's County Personnel Rules and Regulations; and Perform other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Maryland Rules of Evidence and Discovery and applicable state and federal case and statutory law; Knowledge of legal principles and procedures; Skilled in case evaluation and trial work; Skilled in the use of applicable computer programs and software (e.g. Axon); Ability to work efficiently and effectively in high-pressure situations; Ability to handle a large and varied caseload efficiently and effectively; Possess knowledge and understanding of Maryland criminal law and related statutes, criminal procedure and Maryland rules; Possess exceptional organizational and presentation skills; Possess exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to effectively supervise, direct, and evaluate the work of others; Ability to make quick and well-reasoned decisions under pressure; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; Ability to conduct legal research and organize work; Ability to synthesize large amounts of information; Ability to communicate effectively, written and verbal; Ability to use discretion and good judgment in working with sensitive information; and Ability to maintain confidentiality

Education and Experience College Degree; Graduated from an accredited law school; Admission to the Maryland Bar (Licensed Attorney in Maryland and in good standing); Authorized to practice law before the Supreme Court of Maryland. Physical and Environmental Conditions: Work requires light physical effort in the handling of light materials in non-strenuous work positions up to 30 pounds and/or continual standing, sitting, bending, or walking. Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations, which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
