What is an internship in eDiscovery?

An Internship in Ediscovery is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in the field of electronic discovery (ediscovery) within legal or corporate environments. Ediscovery involves identifying, collecting, and analyzing electronically stored information (ESI) for use in legal cases and investigations. Interns typically assist with tasks such as data management, document review, and learning about legal technology tools used to process and review digital evidence. This experience can help interns gain valuable skills relevant to legal technology, compliance, and litigation support. It is often a stepping stone for careers in law, compliance, or information governance.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect during an eDiscovery internship?

As an eDiscovery intern, you can expect to assist with tasks such as collecting, processing, and reviewing electronic documents relevant to legal cases. You'll likely work closely with attorneys, litigation support teams, and IT professionals to help manage large volumes of digital evidence. This may involve using specialized eDiscovery software, organizing data, and maintaining chain-of-custody records. The internship offers valuable exposure to both legal and technical processes and often includes training on industry-standard tools and compliance procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in eDiscovery, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ediscovery Intern, you need a foundational understanding of legal concepts, strong analytical skills, and attention to detail, typically supported by coursework in law or related fields. Familiarity with Ediscovery software such as Relativity, Concordance, or Everlaw, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, is commonly expected. Effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for managing complex data, adhering to legal procedures, and supporting teams in high-stakes litigation environments.
