Job description
Church of the Outer Banks is a Christ-centered community, shaped by the Gospel, and living on mission. We are an Anglican congregation in the Diocese of the Carolinas, gathering Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the First Flight High School auditorium on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. We are Biblical, Welcoming, Multi-Generational, Prayerful, and Missional, and we mean all five of those words.
Three convictions shape everything we do:
- Christ Above All. Jesus is Lord over every part of our lives, our worship, our decisions, and our identity.
- Gospel for All. The good news of Jesus Christ is for every person, with no prerequisites and no perfect record required.
- Mission to All. We are sent to our neighbors, our community, and to the ends of the earth.
Rooted Youth exists to encourage, empower, and equip middle and high school students to love God, love others, and live on mission. About 40 students gather each week for food, fun, fellowship, and time in the Word, including a Wednesday evening middle school gathering, a Sunday evening high school gathering, and midweek Bible studies. Our congregation averages roughly 440 on a Sunday morning, and with close to 100 kids coming up through our children’s ministry, the pipeline into youth ministry is real and it is not slowing down.
This is a ministry with momentum and room to build. The students are here. The families are engaged. The volunteers are willing. What we are looking for is the person to lead it, shepherd it, and give it the shape it will carry for the next decade.
Our whole church walks a four-movement discipleship path: Begin With Him, Be With Him, Become Like Him, Do What He Did. You would be the one carrying middle and high school students along it.
The RoleThe Youth Pastor / Youth Ministry Director is a full-time, 40 hour per week position reporting to the Executive Director. It leads a dynamic, gospel-centered ministry for middle and high school students that fosters faith, community, and growth. The role works in close collaboration with our Children’s Ministry to ensure a seamless discipleship path from childhood into youth, and it directly supervises the Youth Intern, a 10 hour per week learning and support position.
Community Building and Student Engagement- Plan and lead weekly youth gatherings with fellowship, worship, and engaging Bible teaching.
- Organize retreats, service projects, camps, and mission trips that deepen relationships and inspire spiritual growth.
- Build personal relationships with students through presence, mentoring, and listening as they navigate life and faith. This includes showing up at school events and in the places students already are.
- Welcome and integrate new students and families into the youth community.
- Develop and oversee age-appropriate, gospel-centered curriculum for small groups and teaching series.
- Lead deeper discipleship opportunities such as gender-specific groups and student leadership teams.
- Encourage students to serve in the church and community, developing them as young leaders.
- Coordinate with Children’s Ministry for a smooth transition of 5th graders into the youth program.
- Align youth discipleship with the church’s disciple-making pathway: Begin With Him, Be With Him, Become Like Him, Do What He Did.
- Recruit, train, and supervise a team of volunteer youth leaders drawn from parents and young adults.
- Supervise and mentor the Youth Intern, setting clear expectations, giving regular feedback, and shaping the internship as a genuine development opportunity.
- Create standard procedures and playbooks for recurring tasks so the ministry runs consistently and volunteers are empowered.
- Build a leadership development pipeline for volunteers and student leaders so responsibilities are shared and continuity is maintained.
- Use Planning Center to schedule volunteers, track attendance and engagement, and keep student and volunteer records current
- Communicate regularly with parents and the congregation through announcements, email, and social media.
- Handle logistics for youth activities including calendars, transportation, permission forms, registrations, and fees.
- Enforce youth protection and safety protocols at all events, including background checks, training, and proper adult-to-student ratios.
- Manage the youth ministry budget in consultation with church leadership.
- Attend staff meetings and coordinate with church staff to align youth activities with the church-wide calendar.
- Plan the youth ministry schedule and delegate responsibilities well in advance, coordinating with other ministries to avoid conflicts.
- Spiritual maturity. A committed follower of Christ with a clear passion for ministering to youth, high moral character, patience, and a heart for shepherding young people through the challenges of adolescence.
- Experience and skill. Two or more years leading or serving in youth ministry, or in a related education or mentoring role. Able to teach the Bible in a way that holds a teenager’s attention and to facilitate real group discussion. Creative and energetic in designing programs that appeal to youth.
- Leadership. Proven ability to lead and inspire a volunteer team, build community among volunteers, and care for their spiritual well-being. Strong administrative skills for scheduling, budgeting, and communication.
- Communication. Excellent interpersonal skills with students, parents, and church leadership. Able to earn parents’ trust and partner with them in their child’s faith development.
- Tech and tools. Familiar with the social platforms students actually use and wise in how they are used for ministry. Competent with office productivity tools and willing to learn church management software.
- Team collaboration. Works in harmony with church staff and other ministry leaders, contributing to a unified vision of discipleship that includes all generations.
- Flexibility. Willing to work evenings and weekends, and available for occasional multi-day off-site trips.
- Safety and integrity. Must pass required background checks and strictly adhere to all child and youth protection policies, including diocesan safeguarding requirements.
- Doctrine and values. Must fully support the doctrine, mission, and values of Church of the Outer Banks. Our beliefs are published at churchobx.com/our-beliefs.
A bachelor’s degree in ministry, theology, biblical studies, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent ministry experience carries real weight with us, and we will read a proven track record with students as seriously as a transcript. Seminary training is welcomed and is not required to apply.
Compensation and Benefits- Salary: $55,000 to $75,000, depending on experience.
- Health: Employer contributions to a Health Savings Account.
- Retirement: Retirement plan with a 3 percent employer match.
- Vacation: 80 hours (10 work days) annually, increasing to 120 hours (15 work days) after three years of employment. Vacation may include up to four Sundays per year.
- Personal time: 30 hours (4 days) annually for medical appointments, illness, and family needs.
- Paid holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas through New Year’s Day, and the Monday after Easter plus a following week aligned to the local school calendar.
- Bereavement and jury duty leave per church policy.
- Annual professional development, including youth ministry conferences and retreats.
- Logos Bible Software account, provided by the church.
We invest in the people who serve here. If you want to grow as a teacher, a leader, and a shepherd, this is a place that will pay for that growth rather than assume you will fund it yourself.
Why the Outer BanksThe Outer Banks is a year-round community of roughly 40,000 residents on a barrier island chain in northeastern North Carolina, with beaches, sound-side water access, and a strong local culture. It is a place where relational ministry is possible because people actually see each other. It is also a mission field. Many of our students are growing up in a seasonal tourism economy with real pressures, and they need a shepherd who will stay.
