Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity in our Boston office for a Commercial Property Insurance Program Manager within our Commercial Programs team. This role is responsible for overseeing existing delegated underwriting authority programs and contributing to the development of new delegated underwriting authority programs.

In this position, you will join a highly collaborative team focused on disciplined program management inclusive of profitable underwriting and sustainable long-term growth. BHSI program managers are given meaningful ownership of their assigned portfolios and Program Administrator relationships. You will be responsible for executing program strategy and ensuring financial performance of assigned programs utilizing KPIs, data feeds, P&Ls and regular program strategy reviews. We are seeking a teammate with strong analytical capabilities, sound underwriting judgment, excellent organization skills, and a commitment to excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the execution, performance, monitoring and strategic development of assigned programs to ensure compliance with BHSI program management standards.
  • Lead due diligence process for prospective delegated authority programs, including review of submissions, underwriting guidelines, program structure, data, forms and operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain product expertise across BHSI’s admitted and non-admitted product offerings to support appropriate coverage placement and program execution.
  • Partner directly with Program Administrators and Third-Party Administrators on assigned programs to build strong working relationships.
  • Apply underwriting expertise in Commercial Property and Inland Marine lines of business to build profitable portfolios in conjunction with our Program Administrators.
  • Collaborate with the numerous BHSI stakeholders who share oversite of our Commercial Program Business including actuarial, claims, legal, operations and IT to maintain alignment around decisions impacting program business.
  • Maintain underwriting guidelines for assigned programs to promote underwriting profitability, efficient use of internal/external resources and program growth.
  • Establish and develop Program Administrator relationships to support new program additions.
  • Create and monitor performance metrics for assigned programs to monitor underwriting profitability and portfolio composition.
  • Perform underwriting audits on Commercial Program Business to confirm compliance with underwriting guidelines and delegated authority agreements.
  • Coordinate all communication between BHSI stakeholders and Program Administrators to facilitate efficient responses.
  • Domestic travel (~1 time per month) required

Skills:

  • Ability to work both independently and to collaborate broadly with all management levels and underwriting disciplines
  • Desire to learn key aspects of insurance company operations that support the program business, working with numerous departments including Actuarial, Legal, Claims, IT and Operations
  • Very strong negotiation skills
  • Strong communication skills; written and verbal

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ Commercial Property underwriting experience (prior commercial insurance program management experience is beneficial)
  • Inland Marine underwriting experience is a plus but not required
  • Proven data and catastrophe analysis skills (i.e. SQL, Advanced Microsoft Excel, Power BI, AIR Touchstone, RMS, etc.)
  • BS/BA Degree or equivalent preferred

The base salary range for this position in Boston is $150,000 to $175,000 along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
