What does a contract instructional designer do?

A contract instructional designer is a freelance position that handles development responsibilities for learning materials and instructional management systems. You work directly with a client to understand their content requirements and design materials and learning models to best present the information. Your duties also include training others on how to deliver the project, creating user-friendly content, evaluating new eLearning options, updating established programs, and providing end-user support. There is a need for instructional designers in education, business, military, government, and other industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract instructional designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instructional Designer (Contract), you need expertise in curriculum development, learning theory, and instructional design models, often supported by a degree in instructional design, education, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and learning management systems (LMS) is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the creation of effective, engaging learning experiences that meet client objectives and project deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by contract instructional designers when integrating client feedback into course materials?

Contract instructional designers often face the challenge of balancing client feedback with best practices in learning design, especially when feedback may conflict with pedagogical standards. Clear communication and setting expectations early in the project can help ensure a smooth feedback process. Collaborating closely with subject matter experts and project managers is vital to delivering effective and timely course materials that meet client needs.
