Informatics Nurses play a crucial liaison role by bridging the gap between clinical teams and IT specialists. They communicate clinical needs and workflows to IT professionals, help translate technical jargon, and ensure that new healthcare technologies are user-friendly and improve patient care. Collaboration often involves participating in interdisciplinary project meetings, conducting workflow analyses, and providing training to clinical staff on new systems or updates. This teamwork helps ensure successful technology adoption and ongoing optimization within the healthcare setting.

What Is an Informatics Nurse?

An informatics nurse is a medical professional who uses computers and patient data to optimize outcomes and workflow in a medical environment. These specialized nursing professionals work with computer provider order entry (CPOE) and electronic medical records (EMRs) to collect data, interpret results, and identify relationships. EMRs include test results, notes from nurses, and information on medications given to patients. As an informatics nurse, you also help develop evidence-based policies and procedures for organizations, and may serve as an educator, researcher, and even software engineer.

What does an informatics nurse do?

An informatics nurse integrates nursing science with information management and computer technology to improve patient care and healthcare processes. They analyze data, implement electronic health records, and support clinical decision-making, often requiring knowledge of healthcare systems and certifications in informatics. Their role involves collaboration with healthcare teams to optimize technology use in clinical settings.

How much money do nurse informatics make?

Nurse informaticists typically earn a median annual salary of around $90,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, education, and geographic location.
