What is an indirect lending relationship manager?

An Indirect Lending Relationship Manager is a finance professional who oversees and manages relationships between a financial institution (such as a bank or credit union) and third-party dealers or vendors, often in the auto, recreational vehicle, or equipment industries. Their primary role is to facilitate and grow indirect lending programs, where loans are originated at the point of sale by the dealer and then funded by the financial institution. They are responsible for building strong partnerships with dealers, ensuring compliance with lending policies, and meeting lending targets. This role requires strong communication, negotiation, and analytical skills, as well as a deep understanding of lending practices and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an indirect lending relationship manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Indirect Lending Relationship Manager, you need expertise in financial analysis, credit underwriting, and relationship management, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in finance or business. Familiarity with loan origination systems, CRM software, and compliance regulations like Fair Lending is essential. Strong negotiation, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills help build trust with dealer partners and resolve issues efficiently. These competencies are vital for growing loan portfolios, mitigating risk, and maintaining productive partnerships in a competitive lending environment.

How does an indirect lending relationship manager typically collaborate with auto dealerships and internal lending teams?

An Indirect Lending Relationship Manager serves as the primary liaison between the financial institution and partner dealerships, working to facilitate and grow indirect loan origination. They regularly visit dealership partners, provide training on lending products, and address any concerns or questions to ensure a smooth application process. Internally, they coordinate with underwriting and credit teams to streamline approvals and resolve issues efficiently. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to balance relationship management with operational oversight, making collaboration crucial for meeting lending targets and maintaining partner satisfaction.
