Job description

RDQ427R330

At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems - from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers - and customer obsessed - we leap at every opportunity to solve technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started.

As a Sr. Engineering Manager on the App Framework team, you will be responsible for building the foundational service frameworks and runtime infrastructure that power every microservice at Databricks. The team's goal is to make every service at Databricks fast, reliable, observable, and secure by default, without each team having to solve these problems independently. The team owns the core application platform: multi-language service and RPC frameworks, core libraries, request context propagation, overload protection, and abstractions that extend full platform capabilities to any language. The team's work is high-leverage - a single improvement we ship benefits thousands of production services and thousands of engineers across the company.

The impact you will have:

  • Lead and scale a multi-faceted team of talented engineers, which may include line managers and senior/staff ICs, building core application platform infrastructure used by every service at Databricks.
  • Own and set the multi-year technical strategy and organizational roadmap for a critical, cross-cutting domain within the App Framework.
  • Drive and ensure the predictable, high-quality delivery of complex, multi-quarter/multi-year strategic initiatives, often spanning multiple teams and product areas.
  • Hire great engineers to build an outstanding team.
  • Champion the career development and growth of engineers and managers, including coaching senior (L5/L6) ICs and guiding line managers.
  • Ensure high technical standards by instituting processes and a culture of engineering excellence
  • Proactively align and influence product and engineering leadership across multiple partner organizations to ensure the long-term success of the platform.

What we look for:

  • 8+ years of engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems, service frameworks, or platform infrastructure
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience leading strong technical teams
  • A track record of high technical judgment (equivalent to a Staff Engineer) in building and operating large-scale distributed systems, and a deep understanding of customer interactions with platform products across multiple components.
  • Demonstrated success in attracting, hiring, and retaining top-tier talent (L3-L5) and experience coaching and mentoring line managers or senior/staff level ICs (L5/L6). Proven ability to handle complex performance management and promotion cases.
  • Existing experience building and running cloud platforms, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn new concepts in the SaaS space.
