What does a typical workday look like for an ILWU longshore worker?

As an ILWU longshore worker, your day often involves loading and unloading ships, operating heavy machinery like forklifts or cranes, and securing cargo for transport. You’ll collaborate closely with other crew members and supervisors to ensure that workflow remains safe and efficient. Shift schedules can vary, sometimes including nights or weekends due to shipping demands, and outdoor work is standard in all weather conditions. The role can be physically demanding, but it offers a close-knit team environment and opportunities to gain new skills and advance within the union structure.

How can I become a longshoreman?

To become a longshoreman, you typically need to complete an apprenticeship or training program, which includes physical fitness and safety training. Familiarity with heavy machinery, cargo handling equipment, and safety certifications such as OSHA training are highly beneficial. Teamwork, a strong work ethic, and flexibility to adapt to changing shifts or tasks are important soft skills. These qualities are crucial for safely and efficiently managing cargo operations in fast-paced port environments.

Is it hard to get a longshoreman job?

Longshoreman jobs can be competitive and often require physical strength, stamina, and knowledge of safety protocols. Many positions are unionized and may require passing a skills test or training program before employment.
