What is an ILWU?

An ILWU job refers to work performed by members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), which represents dock workers, warehouse workers, and other laborers primarily on the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada. ILWU jobs typically involve loading and unloading cargo, operating heavy machinery, and ensuring the efficient movement of goods through ports. These jobs are known for their strong union protections, good wages, and benefits. Employment is often based on seniority and a hiring hall system, where workers are dispatched as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the ILWU position?

To excel as an ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union) worker, candidates should have physical stamina, manual dexterity, and basic literacy or math skills, often with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with heavy machinery, cargo handling equipment, and safety certifications such as OSHA training are highly beneficial. Teamwork, a strong work ethic, and flexibility to adapt to changing shifts or tasks are important soft skills. These qualities are crucial for safely and efficiently managing cargo operations in fast-paced port environments.

What does a typical workday look like for an ILWU longshore worker?

As an ILWU longshore worker, your day often involves loading and unloading ships, operating heavy machinery like forklifts or cranes, and securing cargo for transport. You’ll collaborate closely with other crew members and supervisors to ensure that workflow remains safe and efficient. Shift schedules can vary, sometimes including nights or weekends due to shipping demands, and outdoor work is standard in all weather conditions. The role can be physically demanding, but it offers a close-knit team environment and opportunities to gain new skills and advance within the union structure.
