What Does a Household Manager Do?

As a household manager, you keep your client’s household clean, organized, and running smoothly. Some common household management duties include scheduling contractors to service the home, managing service staff, planning meals, providing administrative assistance, and coordinating care for pets or children. Experience in hospitality, event planning, property management, and administrative work can all be useful skills to work as a household manager. Discretion, attention to detail, and flexibility will help you succeed in this career.

What are household managers?

Household managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a private residence or estate. Their duties typically include supervising staff, managing household budgets, coordinating maintenance and repairs, organizing events, and ensuring that the household runs smoothly and efficiently. They act as the primary point of contact for vendors and service providers, and may also handle scheduling, shopping, and travel arrangements for the household members. Household managers play a crucial role in maintaining a well-organized and comfortable home environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Household Managers, and how can they be addressed?

Household Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple priorities, managing staff schedules, and adapting to the preferences of homeowners. Clear communication, organization, and flexibility are essential for success in this role. Regular check-ins with both the household staff and principals help ensure tasks are completed efficiently and expectations are met. Building strong relationships with vendors and service providers also streamlines problem-solving and maintenance tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Household Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Household Manager, you need strong organizational abilities, experience in household operations, and often a background in hospitality or property management. Familiarity with budgeting software, smart home systems, and scheduling tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, discretion, and leadership skills help foster trust and coordinate household staff effectively. These competencies ensure smooth household functioning, efficient resource management, and a high level of service for the household’s residents.

About Our Family:
We are a vibrant, hardworking family living on a 16-acre farm, balancing the demands of a growing business with the joys and challenges of raising five kids (ages 8-19) and a niece who lives with us. Our family is homeschooled, and the kids are highly independent in their schooling and their household responsibilities, but with their schedules comes the challenge of maintaining order in our busy household. While we manage our farm and home, our family also runs a thriving business, and lately, the demands of both have begun to outpace our ability to keep everything running as smoothly as we'd like.

Our home is filled with energy, movement, and the hum of our business, which operates out of our barn. As our business continues to grow, we are looking for extra support to help us manage the household tasks that keep us running. From laundry to meal prep, inventory management and organization, we need someone who can step in and help us maintain the structure and efficiency that our busy lives require.

We have a strong focus on maintaining independence within the household. Each of the kids has their responsibilities, and we want them to continue to manage their own tasks, but we're looking for someone to work with them and support their efforts. Our goal is to find a reliable, proactive individual who can help us stay organized, manage the day-to-day logistics, and ensure that our home remains a peaceful and functional space amidst the busyness. While we've always tackled things ourselves, we're realizing that we can't continue to do everything on our own. We're ready to hand over the reins to someone who can help keep everything running smoothly.

If you enjoy working in a dynamic environment and have an eye for detail, we'd love to have you join us. We're looking for a professional who can step in and get things done without needing constant direction, someone who thrives on being proactive, and someone who is ready to help us keep our home and business in harmony. We value open communication and are eager to find a partner who is organized, dependable, and excited to bring new ideas to our household. If this sounds like the kind of environment where you would thrive, we'd love to meet you.

Who You Are / What We're Looking For

  • Proactive & Autonomous: You are a natural self-starter who takes full ownership of the home. You don't wait for a to-do list; you anticipate needs, identify problems before they arise, and jump in to solve them without needing reminders or micromanagement.
  • Organized & Detail-Oriented: You thrive in maintaining household organization and managing multiple tasks efficiently. Whether it's overseeing pantry organization, laundry, or managing daily chores, you take pride in ensuring everything runs smoothly and to the highest standard.
  • Trustworthy & Dependable: You are reliable, trustworthy, and capable of working independently. You respect the family's privacy while being a steadfast partner in managing the home. Your dependability is what allows the family to focus on their business and personal lives.
  • Engaging & Respectful with Kids: You respect the kids' independence while offering support when needed. You can monitor tasks, provide gentle reminders, and help the children stay on track, all while maintaining a balance between guidance and giving them the space to learn and grow.
  • Comfortable with Animals: You are at ease around farm animals and outdoor pets.
  • Flexible & Solution-Oriented: You adapt easily to changes in the family's schedule and household needs. Your ability to shift gears smoothly between different responsibilitieswhether managing seasonal tasks, organizing spaces, or overseeing family logisticsis key to keeping everything running harmoniously.
  • Open to Feedback & Growth: You are open to communication and receptive to feedback, seeing it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. You're looking for a long-term partnership where you can help refine systems and processes to make the household even more efficient.
