Job description

Description:

Position Summary: This is a part-time, hourly position responsible for the continuous cleaning and maintenance of the libraryโ€™s public and office environments before and during open hours. This role utilizes a patrol-based custodial model designed to maintain building cleanliness and keep needed custodial supplies stocked.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains building cleanliness by walking all areas to find and fix messes, spills, or hazards before others report them.
  2. Responds to immediate hazards by cleaning up spills, wet floors, and broken items the moment they are discovered to keep the library safe.
  3. Performs high-touch cleaning by wiping down elevator buttons, handrails, touchscreens, and glass surfaces many times a day.
  4. Checks restrooms every hour to clean surfaces and fill soap and paper supplies.
  5. Sorts and stocks supplies and keeps cleaning chemicals and paper products organized in the supply closets
  6. Provides floor care by using a broom, mop, or manual sweeper to keep hallways and entries clear of dirt or acid.
  7. Handles trash removal by emptying bins as soon as they are three-quarters full to prevent overflows.
  8. Cleans exterior grounds by working with a partner to pick up litter and cigarette butts around the library entrances.
  9. Supports kitchen and laundry by wiping counters and running the dishwasher or laundry machines throughout the day.
  10. Follows safety standards
  11. Other duties as assigned

Salary $ 15.30 an hour; $14.00 for probationary employees. This position belongs in the Union of the Kalamazoo Public Library Aides/Hourly Custodians.


Schedules available 25 hours weekly; 7:00 am to 12:00 am or 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality and dependability.
  • Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill, efficiency, and safety.
  • Ability to operate scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and other equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position as listed below.

Physical demands and work environment The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently within the office and patron areas of the library and in the communities served. In the work environments described below, the position requires effective communication and exchange of information with others, constant repositioning of self to clean restrooms, public and office spaces. Frequently utilizes cleaning equipment such as mops, brooms, vacuums, etc. Occasionally moves objects up to 50 pounds.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job outside of the library environment, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
