As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for histology in the United States is $35.05, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.48 and $41.59 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is histology?

Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of tissues and cells in plants and animals. It involves preparing tissue samples, staining them with special dyes, and examining them under a microscope to identify normal and abnormal tissue structures. Histology plays a crucial role in medicine, particularly in diagnosing diseases such as cancer, by providing detailed information about tissue architecture and cell morphology. Professionals in this field are known as histologists or histotechnologists, and they often work in laboratory settings alongside pathologists.

What are histology jobs?

The duties of histology professionals vary depending on the specialty in which they work. As a histotechnician or histology technician, you study thin slices of specimens under a microscope for medical or forensic purposes. General laboratory technicians may also perform duties related to histology. As a histology lab supervisor, you oversee operations in a lab. Research scientists in fields like cellular biology work in histology labs as well. The area of pathology may be closely related to histology as well, and histologists may report findings related to disease to a pathologist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a histologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Histologist, you need a solid background in biology or medical laboratory science, typically supported by a bachelor's degree and certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL). Proficiency with laboratory equipment, tissue processors, microtomes, and staining techniques is essential, along with familiarity with laboratory information systems. Attention to detail, organization, and strong analytical skills are important soft skills for accurately preparing and analyzing tissue samples. These competencies ensure reliable diagnostic results, support effective patient care, and maintain laboratory safety and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by histology professionals in maintaining sample integrity during processing?

Histology professionals often encounter challenges such as preventing tissue samples from drying out, avoiding cross-contamination between specimens, and ensuring proper fixation to preserve cellular structure. Attention to detail is critical when handling multiple samples, as even small errors can impact diagnostic accuracy. Adapting to new staining protocols or equipment, and coordinating closely with pathologists, are also essential for maintaining high-quality results in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

What is the difference between Histology vs Cytology?

AspectHistologyCytology
Required credentialsTypically requires a histology technician certification or associate degree in histotechnologyRequires a cytology technician certification or similar training
Work environmentLaboratories, hospitals, research facilitiesClinics, hospitals, diagnostic labs
Industry usageUsed for tissue analysis in pathologyUsed for cell analysis, often for cancer screening
Common search intentHistology vs CytologyHistology vs Cytology

Histology and Cytology are both vital in pathology but differ in focus. Histology examines tissue structures, while Cytology analyzes individual cells. Both roles require specialized training and are essential in diagnostic labs, but they serve different purposes in disease detection and research.

Is histology a good career?

Histology is a specialized field within medical laboratory science that involves preparing and analyzing tissue samples for diagnosis. It offers stable employment opportunities, typically requires technical training and certification, and often involves working in laboratories with standard daytime hours. The career can be rewarding for those interested in pathology and laboratory work, with opportunities for advancement and specialization.

Is histology a stressful job?

Histology can be a demanding job due to the precision required in preparing tissue samples and meeting tight deadlines. It often involves repetitive tasks and attention to detail, which can contribute to work-related stress, but the level varies depending on the work environment and workload. Proper training and a well-organized workplace can help manage stress levels in this field.
