At Duke, we celebrate individuality and the unique perspectives that each member of our community brings. As the Utility Distribution Mechanic II, you'll be a vital part of a collaborative team that ensures the safe, reliable operation of our campus utility systems.

As part of our Facilities team, you'll perform all levels of repairs and preventive maintenance of utility distribution systems. Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on all steam distribution, chilled water, central hot water, domestic water, storm water, domestic sewer services, reclaim water. 
 

Qualifications

Education:

Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license

Experience:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, and abilities to demonstrate that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Basic knowledge of workplace safety including PPE use and reaction to emergencies and accidents.

Ability to properly use and maintain hand tools associated with the trade including pipe vises and stands, pipe wrenches, levels, pipe fabrication tools, pipe bending tools and pipe flaring tools.

  What You'll Do:
  • Following a predetermined schedule as well as emergency work as needed, assist in preventative maintenance on utility distribution systems and building components related to the utility distribution mechanics responsibilities. 
  • Perform utility distribution and building component maintenance tasks given by higher level mechanic and/or supervisor. 
  • Data entry into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) relevant to work orders, inventory/ asset management, and preventive maintenance forms, lockout/tagout procedures, hot work permitting, and other trade-relevant documentation. 
  • Use and maintain specialized testing devices, hand and power tools associated with the trade 
  • Clean all job related areas, pick up and deliver parts. 
  • Assist other mechanics as required/directed. 
  • Perform trade-related calculations and the use of equivalents and conversion tables. 
  • Use other required computer software applicable to maintenance operations. 
  • Perform safety duties as a fire watch or confined space entry attendant or entrant. 
  • Assist in the process of lock-out/tag-out of equipment for maintenance personnel. 
  • Assist qualified mechanic with maintenance tasks on multiple utility systems including piping, valves, and various system components
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein
